Did You Know...

... that Neal Willems is probably the new NMP PCH HayaBusa member?

New NMP PCH HayaBusa lineup at Skydive City
posted Dec 17th, 2021 - The breaking news that original NMP PCH HayaBusa member Andy Grauwels will not continue with the team after he won his 19th world championship title (FAI Outdoor - FAI Indoor - CISM) came just a day after the NSL News posted the results of this year's military world championships.

HayaBusa coach Gary Smith explained the options for the team's near future just a day later. The nearest option for the next world meet season in 2022 was bringing back Andy Grauwels' brother David into the active lineup, after he has been filming the team since Michele Silvi became the new inside center.

However, this would only be a temporary solution, as David Grauwels had no plans to return to any of his previous slots in the center. The Belgian 4-way world champions had to begin looking for a new team member for the longer term of the HayaBusa project.

They had scheduled an outdoor winter training camp at Skydive City for this month, as the team continued with the original plans. The NSL News used the opportunity to visit Skydive City this week, and NMP PCH HayaBusa were ready for a new NSL Live Talk and provide their own feedback of the current situation.

Surrounded by 4-way world champions: Neal Willems
The NSL News visit happened in the middle of the training camp, and the Belgians were jumping from an altitude of only 8,000 feet. It was not an exit camp only. Dennis Praet was fighting sinus troubles and could not go to a higher jump altitude. The new senior member in the active lineup and his team mates still worked through the obstacle, as they had a very good reason to complete a good number of training jumps.

One of the HayaBusa members had a bigger smile than the others after each jump. It was former Falco member Neal Willems who had the opportunity to train with three multiple world champions and get the best available video footage from David Grauwels. Neal Willems is the HayaBusa candidate for the open slot.

He is only a candidate, as he still has to go through the vetting process of the Belgian military services and then attend the 3-month boot camp before he will become the official team member. However, the team will be training with him assuming that he will pass all tests.

David Grauwels still comes back for one more competition in front of the camera, as Neal Willems will most likely not be eligible or ready for the CISM World Championship earlier next year. After that, the new lineup will train for the outdoor world meet in October 2022.

NMP PCH HayaBusa is facing some challenges, not only the fact that their main opponent, Arizona Airspeed, is very serious about next year's world meet. The recent announcement of working with coach Joey Jones on a regular basis made the point very clearly.

Neal Willems is taking the inside center slot that he is most familiar with, after his team times in Belgium with FS ONE and Falco. One of the main challenges for him is turning the muscle memory of a left-hand pattern quickly to NMP PCH HayaBusa's right-hand pattern.

The inside center of the left-hand pattern is also inside the plane for exits, while he climbs out for HayaBusa's right-hand pattern and connects in a different way with his piece partner, Jeroen "Bob" Nollet. HayaBusa's tail explained during the NSL Live Talk how his nickname was actually created by new Airspeed coach Joey Jones.

The tasks on hand for Neal Willems are obvious, while they are still not the end of the changes for the Belgian world champions. Michele Silvi has to give up his inside center slot to make room for Neal Willems. He has already switched to outside center and now exits from inside the planes with left-hand doors. He knows the slot from his time with the Italian national team Amnesya. However, Italian teams jump mostly from Pilatus Porter with right-hand doors, and as the outside center for Amnesya he was actually climbing out for exits from the Pilatus Porter. Confusing enough...? There is a lot of work ahead for NMP PCH HayaBusa.
