Did You Know...

... that this month's event combination in Dubai resembled the one in 2015?

8-way awards at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2019
posted Dec 21st, 2021 - The NSL News reported last week that the 2022 season could feature a new exciting 8-way race. Russia's Tanay 8-way team competed at the 6th Dubai International Parachute Championship (DIPC) with exactly the same lineup that had placed 3rd at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 in August.

Tanay 8 were the only team on the 8-way leaderboard, however, the participation of the Russian team indicated somehow that there is a plan to continue for another year and try to win the next FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving in Eloy 2022.

Tanay 8 were one of the three top contenders for the gold medals at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 after winning at the USPA Nationals 2019 and at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2019 just a few weeks later.

The world meet in Russia, which was originally scheduled for August 2020, was canceled and rescheduled for August 2021 due to the corona virus pandemic. Airspeed XP8 and France had an additional year to change the outcome of the world cup in 2019, while Tanay 8 had to maintain the top spot of 2019. The results of the FAI Tanay Mondial in August 2021 have been covered comprehensively by the NSL News.

Tanay 8 did not only come back with exactly the same lineup at the 6th DIPC at the beginning of December, except for a change on the camera slot. They also staid a little bit longer in Dubai and added the ten rounds of the 8-way indoor competition, the 1st Dubai International Tunnel Championship (DITC), to their team records.

Tanay 8 were once again the only participating 8-way team at the indoor competition, after the 6th DIPC had already suffered the lowest participation in the event history. However, they still came back to a training and competition location that they know very well.

The desert dropzone of Skydive Dubai, who also support hosting the high-profile Dubai outdoor events at the Palm Jumeirah, and the 16-foot flying chamber of Inflight Dubai are the winter training locations not only for the Russian 8-way team. Tanay 8 have visited both places numerous times. This year's double-event of ten outdoor rounds at the Palm Jumeirah, followed by ten more indoor rounds at Inflight Dubai was also resembling an event combination that was offered the first time six years ago at the same place. The Tanay 8-way team competed at both events in 2015, as well.

Tanay 8 at the Clash of Champions 2015 and the World Air Games 2015
8-way awards at the World Air Games 2015
The order of events in 2015 was different though. It began with the indoor competition, the Clash of Champions, where the Golden Knights won with the highest 8-way average (32.4) in the history of the sport. A slightly different Tanay lineup finished in 3rd place.

The outdoor competition, the World Air Games 2015, followed ten days after the conclusion of the indoor event in Dubai, once again at the Palm Jumeirah. Both events were not directly connected with each other, and Tanay 8 finished in 2nd place at the end of the ten outdoor rounds.

This year's resumption of the Dubai International Parachuting Championship (DIPC) seems to be more in line with the indoor event, which was now called the Dubai International Tunnel Championship (DITC). It was an unfortunate restart for both events, as the implications of the pandemic were apparently still holding back more teams from visiting Dubai.

Even without any pressure by opposing teams Tanay 8 still finished with the team's second highest average. The same lineup has a 29.7 average in their records that they had posted at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019. The ten rounds at Weembi Lille included an 8-way Super Sequence (M,Q,J,16) where the French 8-way team posted the highest score for a single round in history, and the Russian 8-way team boosted their meet average with a 42-pointer.
