Did You Know...

... that Accord and 4K had their first and very exciting AAA battle?

Florida Tunnel League in January 2019
posted Jan 2nd, 2022 - Times have changed, dramatically. The review of the most current leaderboards, especially the last one of the World Tunnel League in December 2021, is a sad affair, compared to the last monthly leaderboard before the beginning of the corona virus crisis.

A total of 33 teams had used the January 2019 draw to post their own scores and compare them with results from other parts of the skydiving and windtunnel world. The 2019 participation right before the impact of the pandemic now compares to the total of 16 teams in December 2021, and the pandemic does not seem to come to an end yet.

The teams on the NSL/WTL leaderboard of January 2019 competed regularly at the meets of their respective leagues before the implications of the pandemic interfered heavily. The January 2019 leaderboard was generated by teams of four different leagues (Czech Republic, Finland, California, Florida). The December 2021 scores were posted by 14 Czech teams and two from Finland.

Nevertheless, it is no exaggeration to point out that the most recent scores of the World Tunnel League included a very exciting situation on the AAA Class leaderboard.

AAA Class indoor and outdoor: Accord
It was coincidence that the Finnish 4-way team 4K chose the December competition in Helsinki to make the big and last step from AA to AAA Class competition at the last meet of the year, and five of the six slot-switching AAA blocks were drawn for the 10-round competition

This big step in Finland created a 1-point duel on the December leaderboard where the Czech 4-way team Accord were once again back in the AAA Class.

Accord, with original team member Dana Stankova still in the current lineup, started in the AAA Class at outdoor meets in the Czech Republic in 2005.

The current NSL categories were introduced for indoor and outdoor competition years later. Even with the opportunity to use the lower categories, Accord continued in the AAA Class until 2013 and then spent three years (2014 - 2016) on AA Class leaderboards.

The switch back to AAA Class competition came in 2017, and Accord have posted their indoor and outdoor scores on AAA leaderboards ever since. In fact, Accord trained and competed in 4-way beginning in the early 90s, together with Jan Klapka's Bad Boys.

Accord at the December meet of the Czech Tunnel League
Last A Class meet: 4K in January 2019
Accord did not know that they would have a new opponent in their area of the AAA Class leaderboard in December. Two teams were eager enough in Finland to brave the current pandemic situation, 4K for the first time in AAA Class competition.

The complete current lineup (Pauli Hattunen, Leena Kajamäki, Heikki Kervinen, Ari Kousa) started together in the Rookie Class of 2016. They moved up to A Class competition in 2017 until the end of the 2018 season, and made the next step to AA in 2019. The same lineup did not miss a meet of the Finnish Tunnel League after that and were obviously ready for the final and ultimate step to AAA in December.

The December leaderboard 2021 turned out to be the first time that Accord and 4K were facing each other indirectly in the same category. Both teams had actually comped at the same time in January 2019, as well, and they just posted their scores on different leaderboards, Accord as usual in AAA, 4K for their last time in the A Class.

Accord won this exciting 1-point battle this time, and 4K will probably take a closer look at their AAA opponent in the Czech Republic in the near future. Finnish team Tribe, with Nadja Lönnroth substituting for Vesa Vuorenkoski, split the Czech senior and junior teams with their 3rd place on the December leaderboard.
