... that Aerokart Ak'demie and HF Cubs will have a re-match in Charleroi?

Aerokart Ak'demie 4-way juniors in 2014
posted Jan 26th, 2022 - The NSL News introduced the new French national team in 4-way Women with the update on January 23rd. National coach Mathieu Bernier had even more news related to his rebuilding of the French national teams for this year and the near future.

It has not become easier for countries to organize and manage their national teams with qualifications and selections for world meets and world cups ever since FAI/ISC decided to include indoor competition in their event portfolio.

Teams, coaches and managers have to find the right balance between indoor and outdoor training and create schedules that accommodate the new combination as efficiently as possible if they aim at the top positions on the international leaderboards.

Mathieu Bernier in France is joggling the different events and national teams inside of the limited government budget that he has available. It has been difficult enough for him to find a way how to be competitive in three of the Formation Skydiving events (4-way Open, 4-way Women, 8-way). He compromised training for the 4-way teams, who were also competing in 8-way. Eventually, France left the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 with two sets of silver medals.

Sharing the complete French budget and talent for the preparations for the indoor and outdoor events both adds financial and logistical challenges.

Mathieu Bernier was on his way to separate the national indoor and outdoor teams as much as possible with a different approach to the new situation.

France had two different lineups at the outdoor and indoor world meets of the past years, at least in 4-way Women. His latest selection of the new French national team reverses the previous strategy and assigns the new lineup to both events in 2022.

However, the same idea is still alive, and it materializes with the new French national 4-way Open lineup for the upcoming indoor world cup in Charleroi. Mathieu Bernier has selected the 4-way Junior silver medalists of the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019 as the new national indoor team in 4-way Open.

The NSL News has followed the French 4-way junior project since it was launched in 2014, and three of the newly selected members of the French national indoor team have been a part of the 4-way junior project from the very beginning.

Tom Mattoni, Oscar Massier and Cameron Malié started in different lineups of the project teams. Junior coach Marin Ferre eventually selected them for the same Aerokart Ak'demie lineup in 2016, together with Oscar Massier's brother Eliot, and they have been training and competing together ever since.

The same 4-way junior lineup of 2016 eventually took 4-way to the skies, as well, and they won their first outdoor competition at the French Nationals 2020 with the 1st place on the AA Class leaderboard.

Tom Mattoni, Oscar Massier and Cameron Malié followed up with their first AAA Class competition a year later and won bronze medals at the French national outdoor championships in September last year. They were back a month later for the national indoor championships, where they added the French 4-way gold medals to their unique indoor and outdoor career with a 24.8 average.

Tom Mattoni, Oscar Massier and Cameron Malié had Jean Baptiste Martin in the lineup at their first AAA Class outdoor competition, and national videographer David Ricard was filming the team. Mathieu Bernier then added Mathieu Quizy to the indoor lineup of the three former 4-way juniors when Eliot Massier did not continue, and the 24.8 average with the 1st place was the result at the national indoor championship.

Mathieu Quizy is still one of the youngest French national 4-way competitors. He was 20 years of age when he was selected for the national B-team, as the NSL News reported on 23 July 2017. He was in the Espoir Maubeuge Weembi lineup until 2019 where he trained and competed together with members of the new French national team in 4-way Women.

He transitioned to a new French B-team (Espoir Weembi Lille) in 2020 where he spent even more time with Elise Poindron and Jessica Thebault. Espoir Weembi Lille still outscored the former 4-way juniors at the outdoor championship before Mathieu Quizy switched to the Aerokart Ak'demie lineup.

He joined forces one more time with his former B-team mates at the Weembinamic 2021 in December before Elise Poindron and Jessica Thebault were selected for the new 4-way Women lineup, and Mathieu Quizy for the national 4-way Open indoor team.

All former B-team members and 4-way juniors will have their first international test with their new teams at the indoor world cup. That's where Tom Mattoni, Oscar Massier and Cameron Malié will also have an indirect re-match with the HF Cubs who won the gold medals in 4-way Junior in 2019. They will post their scores on different leaderboards and still use the same AAA Class competition draw...
