... that Piteraq took the 4-way Women top spot from Skynamite in Germany?

Meltemi Oceanside Illertissen in training at Oceanside
posted Feb 15th, 2022 - The NSL News posted an update from Germany a few days ago, which explained the changes in the lineup of the national 8-way team, Airbus Oceanside Illertissen. Team captain Thomas Spielvogel confirmed the information and had additional news.

The story also provided a brief overview of the recent events and of the other German national teams. Nothing has changed in 4-way Open, while the situation in 4-way Women has been a little bit more complicated. Three different teams have been competing for the two slots as the national teams at FAI/ISC indoor and outdoor events.

The outdoor situation was not too complicated, as the German Nationals 2021 was the qualifier for the next outdoor world meet this October in Eloy. Skynamite had won the 4-way Women competition in 2019 and were supposed to compete for the German delegation at the FAI Tanay Mondial last year. All German teams withdrew from the event, and last year's national championships were the new qualification event for Eloy 2022.

Meltemi Oceanside Illertissen outscored Skynamite (15.5 - 14.2) and will compete for Germany at the FAI Outdoor World Meet. The new German national team in 4-way Women currently train at Oceanside in California with new team member Andrea Kleinschmidt, who has replaced Susa Serra.

Skynamite FSZ Saar - Piteraq at the German Indoor Nationals 2019
Meltemi Oceanside Illertissen at the German Nationals 2021
It was more complicated with the qualification of the German indoor teams in 4-way Women. Thomas Spielvogel explained that there has been no indoor competition in Germany since February 2020, when the Jochen Schweizer Arena in Munich hosted the Fly Challenge.

Skynamite's 2019 lineup (Sandra Dederichs, Sylvia Schlaphof, Yasmin Schütte, Janine Tillenburg) won the 4-way Women duel with the new and third 4-way Women team Piteraq (Linda Koeb, Sylvia Maier, Susa Serra, Evangelina Warich) and competed for Germany at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019.

Neither Germany nor FAI/ISC hosted any sanctioned indoor or outdoor competitions in 2020, and the Fly Challenge in February was the last indoor competition where Skynamite and Piteraq met. Both teams competed with different lineups, and Skynamite had once again the upper hand at the last event before a 2-year break, due to the implications of the corona virus crisis.

However, there were no FAI sanctioned indoor world cups or world meets in 2021, while the plans for the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 in Charleroi this April have materialized.

Skynamite FSZ Saar - Piteraq at the Fly Challenge 2020
Skynamite at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
Thomas Spielvogel, who is also in charge of indoor competition in Germany, said that he needed clarification in 4-way Women after the long break and with the changes in the lineups of Skynamite and Piteraq. He scheduled a qualification event only for the two 4-way Women teams in January, this time at the second windtunnel in Munich, the FlyStation.

Skynamite had two new team members since 2021 (Shaline Dincher, Katharina Reiß) and would not qualify as the national indoor team any longer with only two returning members (Sylvia Schlaphof, Yasmin Schütte). Piteraq had only one change in the lineup (Petra Jastram, first for original member Evangelina Warich, then for Carola Fietz in 2020) and would be eligible.

However, the qualification event in January would give both teams the opportunity to show their current performance level with the current lineups, and Piteraq won by 22 points. The 22.0 average is close to the highest German 4-way Women average (22.7) that ISB Air posted at the World Challenge 2012.

Piteraq will have a new opportunity to set a new record number in Charleroi, where they will also meet Skynamite again. The rules of the FAI World Cup allow four teams to compete in each event. Piteraq is the only German national team in 4-way Women on the European Championship leaderboard at the same event. Both German teams will compete at the German Indoor Nationals at the beginning of March before traveling to Belgium in April.
