... that the Mattoni 4-way family will compete in three different teams at the indoor world cup?

Stephane Mattoni with the Monaco team
posted Feb 21st, 2022 - The recent NSL News updates from France introduced the new national indoor and outdoor 4-way lineups for the 2022 season and was completed with the lineup of the 4-way Open Class team. The three national indoor teams in 4-way Open, 4-way Women and 4-way Junior will compete for the French delegation at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022, as the preview on February 17th was showing.

France has the second largest indoor delegation with six teams, behind Russia with seven teams. The three other French teams (St. Flow Weembi, Once Pakoi, Monaco Aerodyne) compete in 4-way Open. Julien Degen, 4-way and 8-way world champion is player-coaching St. Flow Weembi, while his former 8-way world champion team mate Emmanuel Sarrazin has been guiding Once Pakoi since 2019.

Monaco Aerodyne is completing the French delegation and is not competing for one of the smallest sovereign city-state countries in the world any longer. Monaco has discontinued the FAI/ISC membership, and the 4-way team is back in the French delegation.

The French 4-way junior teams have recently been training and competing under the Monaco umbrella, as well, even though they were always a part of the French indoor delegation. However, Monaco's former 4-way senior team has a special relationship with the French 4-way juniors, with or without the Monaco affiliation.

Tom Mattoni with the French national 4-way Open Class indoor team
Tom Mattoni was a part of the French Aerokart Ak'demie junior project at the very beginning in 2014, and he has now eight years of 4-way training and competition behind him. The NSL News explained how he finally transitioned with his complete junior lineup to outdoor competition and won the French AA Class gold medals in 2020.

His biggest supporter has been his father Stephane Mattoni, who is one of the original members of the former Monaco senior team. He is still training and competing with his original team mate Jeff Ronzevalle, and currently with Marion Baggio and Arnaud Morey in the lineup.

Stephane Mattoni has been watching his son Tom growing up in the 4-way junior project, and national coach Mathieu Bernier eventually selected Tom Mattoni for his national 4-way teams, as well. Tom Mattoni will compete with the national indoor team for the French delegation at the indoor world cup.

He and his indoor team mate Mathieu Quizy will then switch to outdoor training and competition with the French national team in 4-way Open, where Damien Gouriou and Alban Rumolo complete the lineup for the coming years, with David Ricard on camera.

Noe Mattoni with the French national team in 4-way Junior
Stephane Mattoni has been watching his son Tom posting scores on the 4-way Junior/AA Class leaderboards, while he was competing in the AAA Class with his senior team. They attended the same event in the two different events last time at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019, where Tom Mattoni won silver medals in 4-way Junior for the French delegation, while his father competed for Monaco.

It was in March 2020, at the French Indoor Nationals, when father and son opposed each other directly on the AAA Class leaderboard for the first time. Father Tom Mattoni and his senior team had no chance to keep up with the 4-way juniors (26.0 - 18.8) two years ago.

Tom Mattoni and his experienced outdoor competitors may have had hopes to keep up better with the former juniors when they turned to outdoor competition, as well. It did not happen, as Tom Mattoni and his young team mates had the upper hand (14.6 - 11.4) at their first AAA Class outdoor competition, as well, and won the bronze medals ahead of the former Monaco team at the national championships in 2021.

The distance between Tom and Stephane Mattoni grew to over a hundred points (28.3 - 17.1) when Tom Mattonie competed for the first time with his new team, the national outdoor lineup, at the Weembinamic 2021. Father and son will be back on the same leaderboard at the indoor world cup, where both teams compete for the French delegation. Stephane Mattoni will also proudly watch his other younger son Noe Mattoni, who is in the new French national team in 4-way Junior...
