Did You Know...

... that the new French national outdoor team competed at the Weembinamic 2021?

Damien Gouriou and Alban Rumolo at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020
posted Feb 22nd, 2022 - The NSL News reported on January 26th that French national coach Mathieu Bernier selected three former 4-way juniors of the Aerokart Ak'demie project (Tom Mattoni, Oscar Massier, Cameron Malié) for the national indoor lineup in 4-way Open, with Mathieu Quizy as the 4th member.

The story on February 10th followed up with the new lineup of the French national outdoor team, which includes two of the indoor competitors (Tom Mattoni, Mathieu Quizy) and two members of the previous lineup (Damien Glouriou, Alban Rumolo), with David Ricard on camera.

National coach Mathieu Bernier said that he has a long-term perspective for the new lineup, even though training will begin after the FAI Indoor World Cup in April, and the team will compete for France at the FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving this year in Eloy.

The new French national outdoor team has not jumped from planes yet, as Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy are first preparing for the indoor world cup with their other lineup. However, a closer look at the results of the Weembinamic 2021 is showing that the new outdoor lineup have at least competed together.

The Weembinamic 2021 took place in November last year, several months after the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020, where Damien Glouriou and Alban Rumolo competed for France in 4-way Open and in 8-way. National coach Mathieu Bernier was still considering his options for the selection of the new French national teams at that time.

His first announcement was the one of the indoor lineup for the world cup in Charleroi in April, and it included only Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy. The next update from France came a few days later with the new lineup of the French 4-way Junior team.

However, in the meantime, between the completion of the outdoor world meet and the first announcements of new French national teams, Damien Glouriou, Alban Rumolo, Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy had literally connected with each other without an official assignment.

It was the Weembinamic 2021 in November last year when this lineup appeared on the NSL News leaderboard under the Aerokart team name.

It still took a few more months until national coach Mathieu Bernier confirmed the lineup of the new national outdoor team in 4-way Open officially. The NSL News eventually posted the related update on February 10th.

Damien Glouriou, Alban Rumolo, Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy won the Weembinamic 2021 championship title in both formats, after making it to the finals and defeating Roast Beef A, with indoor expert and player-coach Roy Janssen in the lineup (56 - 51).

Aerokart, with the new French national outdoor lineup in 4-way Open, posted a 28.3 average on the traditional leaderboard after the ten rounds at Weembi Lille. The sequence of Round 1 (C,O,A,P,F) boosted the meet average, while the pickup team at that time still showed an impressive performance.

This performance probably impressed national coach Mathieu Bernier just as much and supported his later decision to assign the lineup as the new national outdoor team in 4-way Open. Only Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy will compete at the indoor world cup though. There they will try to copy the Weembinamic scoring level and beat their own 24.8 average with their indoor team mates Oscar Massier and Cameron Malié that they posted at the French Indoor Nationals 2021.
