Did You Know...

... that Israel is hosting the next outdoor world meet in 2024?

Skydiving over the Dead Sea in Israel
posted Mar 13th, 2022 - The cancellation and rescheduling of the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 a year later in August 2021 had created a 3-year gap between the previous world meet in Australia 2018 and last year's event in Russia.

The International Skydiving Commission (ISC) of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) decided to return to the previous rotation of annual FAI/ISC events (world meets - world cups) by scheduling the next World Championship of Formation Skydiving a year after the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020, which took place in August 2021. It will be hosted by Skydive Arizona in Eloy this October.

The 2023 season will bring a world cup to the outdoor teams, which will be hosted by Norway in Voss, Bergen. The International Skydiving Commission also scheduled the next outdoor world meet in 2024 during their annual meeting, which took place at the beginning of this year in Bucharest, Romania.

The commission voted unanimously for the only bid that was submitted two and a half years before the next world meet. The event will be held at the Bar Yehuda Airfield in Israel, two hours away from Tel-Aviv and 45 minutes from Jerusalem. It is located in the middle of the Judean desert and near the Sedom salt mountain, on the shores of the Dead Sea.

NSL Live Talk with Joey Jones and Ron Miasnikov on March 10th

The event is scheduled for the end of October 2024, which gives participating countries almost exactly two complete years for the same 2-year event rotation that was established in 2004. Israel's ISC Delegate Ron Miasnikov submitted the bidding proposal in January. She is also heading the Organizing Committee for the event.

Ron Miasnikov recently invited Arizona Airspeed coach Joey Jones to Israel, where he was coaching indoor and outdoor teams and introduced skydivers to 4-way training and competition. Israel has one 4-way team registered for the upcoming FAI Indoor World Cup 2022, who were training with Joey Jones, as well.

Ron Miasnikov explained in the new NSL Live Talk conversation that the team (Flyboys) was originally registered for the 4-way Junior competition in Charleroi. One of the team members turned out to be unavailable for the trip to Belgium, and the team had to switch to 4-way Open when a 4-way senior stepped in as the substitute.

The NSL Live Talk began with a review of the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship and the Shamrock Showdown that Airspeed coach Joey Jones followed remotely and commented briefly.

4-way jump plane in 2024: PAC 750XL
The conversation turned to the next outdoor world meet in 2024 where Arizona Airspeed will most likely visit Israel as the defending world champions in 4-way Open. Joey Jones and Ron Miasnikov provided as much information of the event location and the logistics as possible, and one of the relevant topics was the aircraft for the event.

Ron Miasnikov confirmed that the 4-way teams will exit from PAC 750XL jump planes, and the host will add a Cessna Caravan 208 to accommodate the 8-way competition. The PAC 750XL is not the most popular jump plane in the world for 4-way teams, and Joey Jones and Ron Miasnikov offered advice how to prepare for the situation in 2024.

The ISC delegates also discussed a political question related to the participation of Muslim people at the event, which was raised during the January meeting. Recent events have obviously resulted in the exclusion of some teams from participating at FAI/ISC events. Ron Miasnikov responded in January that "the people of Israel believe they should not mix sports and politics, and everyone is invited to the competition". ISC President Rayner reminded the ISC Plenary that this is a political question, which should not be discussed: "One of the rules of the FAI is that competitions are open to everyone, and free access should be made to the countries".
