posted Apr 6th, 2022 - The situation of the NSL Power Rankings in 4-way Open for the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 turned out to be even more dramatic than the adjustments in 4-way Junior and 4-way Women.

The 4-way Open Class teams were last in the order of the traditional 4-way indoor events, followed by 4-way VFS. The NSL News camera arrived just in time to capture that last three teams in the speed test sessions on Wednesday morning.

Echochamber, Arizona Airspeed and Aerokart Ak'demie finished off the speed test in the same flying session, and it changed the expected ranking order significantly. The French national team in 4-way Open, with three former Aerokart Ak'demie juniors and Mathieu Quizy, delivered two very impressive performances and deserved an upgrade.

Cameron Malie, Oscar Massier, Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy were in 5th place so far, first tied with Meraki, then alone after the 26.0 average at the French Indoor Nationals. Even that did not seem realistic enough after the speed test performance, and they are now predicted to finish alone in 2nd place.

Not only the NSL News was surprised and impressed with the performance on Wednesday morning. However, there was still enough time to adjust the previous NSL Power Rankings before the first four rounds on Thursday will be telling the ultimate truth of the situation at the end of the first day.

Tom Mattoni's father Stephane did not promise too much when he mentioned a surprise that will be waiting for teams and audience. His son's team lived up to his expectations and even impressed Arizona Airspeed member Niklas Hemlin, who was watching the French performance very carefully at the same flying session.

Stephane Mattoni and national coach Mathieu Bernier were watching the performances of both teams in the audience outside of the flying chamber. Conclusion of all observers was that Arizona Airspeed and Aerokart Ak'demie seem to perform on the same level. There could be a competition for the 1st place in 4-way Open.

It would still be a big surprise if the French team could really keep up with Airspeed throughout all ten rounds, as they have just arrived on this performance and scoring level. Airspeed has delivered this performance at several events and are very familiar with the challenges. The Aerokart Ak'demie youngsters need ten rounds of the same quality to really threaten the top contender, which is not impossible...
