Did You Know...

... that Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy switch to outdoor training and competition?

Aerokart Monaco Ak'demie at the Weembinamic 2021
posted Apr 12th, 2022 - One of the few teams in the world who could aim at keeping up with Arizona Airspeed is the French national indoor team in 4-way Open, Aerokart Monaco Ak'demie. Three of the team members (Cameron Malie, Oscar Massier, Tom Mattoni) have been training and competing together since 2016 when they were a part of the French 4-way junior program at the Aerokart windtunnel in Paris.

National coach Mathieu Bernier was aware of the potential of the team, and he decided last year to assign the three former juniors as the national indoor team in 4-way Open, with Mathieu Quizy as the 4th member.

It was a very successful move, according to the progression of the scoring numbers. The very young lineup, with Mathieu Quizy and his 25 years of age as the senior member, started with a 24.8 average at the Weembinamic 2021 in October and lifted the scoring level to 26.0 at the French Indoor Nationals 2022 last month.

The scores in March resulted in an upgrade in the last NSL Power Rankings before Round 1 at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022. The French team was now expected to finish alone in 2nd place, coming from the previous position (5th). Some French insiders even saw a chance to threaten Arizona Airspeed.

26.0 at the French Indoor Nationals in March
The French 4-way experts must have known something that the rest of the world could not have taken notice of. The young team had lifted their performance level once again in an even more impressive way in the last weeks before the indoor world cup.

The French delegation was eventually not that far off with their hopes that Aerokart Monaco Ak'demie might put some pressure on Arizona Airspeed. In fact, the pressure became real when their 4-way Open Class team won the fastest sequence of the 10-round meet in Round 2 and were tied with the U.S. team in 1st place.

However, the same hope could only be alive for another hour, as Arizona Airspeed took the wake-up call very seriously and put seven points between them and France only in the following round alone. The difference had grown to 13 points before the Aerokart team were able to tie Airspeed's score in Round 6.

The last four rounds went all to Airspeed, and the difference was finally 29 points after Round 10.

31.7 at the FAI Indoor World Cup
Arizona Airspeed won the meet with a new team record average and without any serious pressure for the "Airspeed Machine" after Round 3, while the French team confirmed their then expected finish in 2nd place, after outscoring NMP PCH HayaBusa by eight points.

The most impressive part was the 31.7 average on the final leaderboard for Aerokart Monaco Ak'demie. It took the team less than a month to go from 26.0 at their national indoor championships to 31.7 in Charleroi. Only the Weembi High Rollers performed on a higher level in the French 4-way indoor history.

The fairytale story of the former French juniors comes to an end now, after they finally outscored the HF Cubs, their direct 4-way Junior opponents at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019. The HF Cubs finished with a 28.5 average on the 4-way Women leaderboard in Charleroi with the same lineup, while Mathieu Quizy had replaced Eliot Massier after the 2019 meet at Weembi Lille.

Only former 4-way junior and senior silver medalist Tom Mattoni continues with the French national outdoor team from here on forward, together with Mathieu Quizy. 22-year old Alban Rumolo, member of the French national 4-way and 8-way teams, and his team mate Damien Gouriou (33) join them for the outdoor lineup. David Ricard will be on camera.
