Did You Know...

... that Arizona Airspeed lead NMP PCH HayaBusa by seven at half-time?

Gary Smith with the Qatar Tigers delegation
posted Jun 26th, 2022 - Yesterday's NSL News update from the 2022 CISM Military World Championships in Austria ended with the exciting news that Arizona Airspeed is performing the same eight sequences during their running training camp at Skydive Arizona, host of the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022 in October.

The videos of the first four rounds are now available, and preliminary scores have been added to the virtual leaderboard of the real event.

At the same time, the NSL News reached out to Gary Smith, who is present at the event for his coaching job with the Qatar Tigers. He is in an interesting position that the NSL News has discussed with him at earlier occasions. He has coached the Belgian team to their multiple world championship titles, while his current obligation is bringing the Qatar Tigers to the top position in the world.

Both teams are also competing at the CISM event, and Gary Smith provided an overview and an update from Austria. The CISM teams had completed their Round 5 and were done for the day. NMP PCH HayaBusa won the round by four points and are now 13 points ahead of the Qatar Tigers. Gary Smith said that the HayaBusa lineup at the CISM event was very pleased with the performance in Round 5, which was their best one of the meet.

The still reigning 4-way world champions from Belgium themselves were five points behind Arizona Airspeed, according to the currently posted scoring numbers.

However, Gary Smith said that the judging at the CISM event has been extremely tight, and there was no room for any potentially not detected flaws.

Gary Smith has one of the most trained eyes in the history of the sport, and he will take a closer look at the Airspeed videos, as soon as he has strong enough internet connection. Then he will be able to compare the posted Airspeed scores with the judging at the CISM event.

The difference between all three teams (Arizona Airspeed - NMP PCH HayaBusa - Qatar Tigers) is smaller before penalties. Airspeed and HayaBusa are separated by seven points after Round 4 on the unofficial leaderboard, while they are almost on exactly the same pace level (130 - 128) disregarding any point deductions.

The Qatar Tigers are 16 points behind Arizona Airspeed after four penalties and only 13 points before the CISM judging.

Gary Smith said that some of the judges at the CISM event, including InTime operator Dirk Venter, are also responsible for 4-way scores at FAI/ISC events. He will try to evaluate the Airspeed videos according to the same judging standards that have been applied in Austria.

However, Gary Smith has followed the development of the current Airspeed lineup carefully, and he said that the U.S. team has reached the point where NMP PCH HayaBusa was when they won their world championship titles in the past years.

The NSL News pointed out during the recent coverage of the British team Chimera that the coaches of the opposing teams (Chimera and XPG4 versus NFTO) have their own special relationships, as well (Niklas Hemlin versus Andy Grauwels).

The situation is very similar between NMP PCH HayaBusa, Qatar Tigers and Arizona Airspeed. Joey Jones is helping Airspeed to take back the world's 4-way top spot, while Gary Smith is on the opposite side. It becomes even more interesting considering the fact that Joey Jones and Gary Smith won their own world championship titles together - as team mates for DeLand Majik in 2004.
