... that the Tomscat Trophy had a strong comeback after a 2-year break?

posted Jul 5th, 2022 - Last weekend featured once again the Tomscat Trophy in the Netherlands, an annual event that has been at least as popular as the national championships since it was created decades ago.

The Tomscat Trophy commemorates two members of the Dutch 4-way team Tomscat, Remie Herder and Sjaak Strating, who died in Perris Valley on April 24th, 1992, in a plane crash. It was the same plane crash where members of the U.S. team Airmoves died. Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld was a member of the Airmoves and survided.

Dutch FAI judge Mike Pennock has been organizing the Tomscat Trophy for many years, and he invited the Dutch 4-way community once again to join the event. 12 teams followed his call this year, after a 2-year break due to the corona virus crisis.

18 teams had attended the last Tomscat Trophy in 2019 in the same three NSL categories (AAA - AA - A). The Netherlands still completed their national championships in August 2019 with a total of 13 teams before the 2-year break of the Tomscat Trophy. The national championships were back in 2021 with a total of seven participating teams. This year's 12 teams at the Tomscat Trophy was a strong comeback for the event after the pandemic.

Mike Pennock was back as the event organizer, and he was not in the Dutch judging panel this year. He was in the FAI Jury for the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 at Airspace Charleroi, where he was following the competition action of three Dutch teams, Out Of The Blue and Chaotic Motion in 4-way Open, Fatal Four in 4-way Women.

Out Of The Blue, the Dutch national team in 4-way Open, finished in 10th place (24.0) at the indoor world cup and now train for the FAI Outdoor World Meet in October. They did not attend the Tomscat Trophy this year, after winning the event in 2018 and 2019.

The previous Tomscat Trophy in 2019 was Chaotic Motion's first competition. The Dutch AAA Class team was back with the same lineup at the national championships two years later for the 2nd place behind Out Of The Blue, and then again at the FAI Indoor World Cup/a> in April this year.

Chaotic Motion impressed with a 22.3 average at the indoor world cup and even outscored Out Of The Blue in two of the ten rounds, as the NSL News reported on May 18th.

Chaotic Motion did not have the complete lineup available for the Tomscat Trophy. Sofia van der Vlist's father Hans van der Vlist replaced Manuel Klinis for the event, and the different lineup decided to sign up for the AA Class competition.

Chaotic Motion VIXX, launched with the original lineup under Kaotik Motion in 2019, still did not have any opposition on the AA leaderboard and easily won in this category. Lux took the 1st place in the AAA Class competition in the absence of Out Of The Blue, after two significantly stronger rounds (3 and 7) over Shinobi, who finished with a new team record average of the current lineup.

The actual Tomscat Trophy did not go to the winner of the AAA Class competition this year. Lux will get their team name on this year's AAA Class plaque. However, the signature trophy was handed to Hans van der Vlist of the AA Class winner Chaotic Motion.

Chaotic Motion will probably be back with Manuel Klinis on the AAA Class leaderboard at the national outdoor championships. The event is scheduled for the beginning of September. Out Of The Blue, already qualified as the national team in 4-way Open, will then have a month to get ready for the outdoor world meet at Skydive Arizona.
