... that the A/Beginners Class at the USPA Nationals promises once again exciting competition?

A/Beginners Class teams and competitiors at the USPA Nationals 2021
posted Jul 28th, 2022 - The first part of the Pre-Nationals 2022 included an A Class duel between two teams from Texas. It was a tight competition in four of the six rounds, where the new team, Toxic Turtles, were only one point (20 - 19) behind the winner, Toxic Ex Girlfriends.

Toxic Turtles actually picked up their 4-way competition pace on a higher level compared to the 2.2 average that the all-female Toxic Ex Girlfriends lineup posted in the Rookie Class competition of the Texas Skydiving League's April meet.

Both teams have another opportunity to test their progression, as TSL director Scott Latinis invites teams to the Dallas Super Cup on the August 20 weekend. The final showdown of any A Class teams will be the competition in the Beginners Class at the USPA Nationals in September.

Steve Hubbard, USPA Director of Competition, and Jim Rees, Chair of USPA's Competition Committee, both confirmed that the rules for this new category will be the same as they were at the USPA Nationals 2021.

Steve Hubbard addresses A Class teams and competitors
In fact, Steve Hubbard and Jim Rees both also confirmed that the A/Beginners Class will most likely become a consistent part of USPA Nationals in the future. It was introduced as a test event in 2021 and 2022, and there does not seem to be anything in the way of adopting the new category.

USPA will make the final decision at the next board meeting and with additional information after this year's national championships. The name of the new category may change to a more attractive version, and the number of rounds is also under scrutiny. Teams and competitors were asking for additional two rounds, as the dive pool would allow a total number of eight sequences.

Steve Hubbard said that USPA decided already earlier to synchronize dive pool and rules between the current A/Beginners Class and the USPA Collegiate Championships. This move has guaranteed a smooth and efficient transition for all teams in these events to the AA/Intermediate Class at USPA Nationals.

The two A Class teams from Texas can carry their regional meet experiences straight into the national championships. The same A Class leaderboard of the Pre-Nationals in Texas is still open for other teams at the NSL Pre-Nationals Cloud 2022.

A Class awards at the USPA Nationals 2021
Toxic Ex Girlfriends and Toxic Turtles were not yet on last year's medal level in the A/Beginners Class last weekend. However, this could change easily and quickly. Two A Class Super Sequences in Round 2 and Round 6 boosted the averages in Eloy, while each of the six sequences last weekend included one of the eight blocks of the A Class dive pool.

It is unusual that the A Class draw would not include at least one Super Sequence, and both Texas teams have the potential to show significantly increased meet averages very soon, first at the August meet of the Texas Skydiving League and then at the USPA Nationals.

The NSL News mentioned a few times that Spaceland Toxic is expected to be in medal contention on the AA/Intermediate Class leaderboard at the USPA Nationals. The scoring potential is similar to the two A Class teams from Texas, as the AA Class draw was on the slow side, as well.

Toxic's Outside Center Laura Galdamez will probably look forward to attending another regional meet before the national championships. She is in her first year of 4-way competition, her team mate John "Demo" McDonnell told the NSL News. The battle for AA/Intermediate Class medals at USPA Nationals is just as nerve-wrecking as it is usually between NMP PCH HayaBusa and Arizona Airspeed at world meets...
