Did You Know...

... that Denmark added AA Class competition to the national championships?

VAF Warriors at Denmark's indoor championships of 2021
posted Aug 10th, 2022 - The most recent scores came from Denmark and the Scandinavian country's national outdoor championships. The AAA Class leaderboard features a change in the power structure, where a new CISM Denmark lineup outscored the reigning champions of 2021, Sequenz.

Sequenz came back in 2019, after a hibernation period of almost a decade, as the NSL News reported on 9 July 2021. The new lineup made it through the two years of the corona virus crisis after the indoor comeback under the team name "Aetas Volat" at the Danish Indoor Nationals 2019 and returned to outdoor training and competition with Kjetil Nordin replacing Jesper Rasmussen.

Sequenz were qualified for the next world meet in Eloy 2022, and Ulrik Hogsberg took back his slot as an original Sequenz member at last year's national indoor championships in October. The same lineup then came back to defend their 4-way outdoor title of 2021 against the CISM Denmark team.

Three of the CISM Denmark members (John Behrendt Petersen, Anne Mine Petersen, Martin Soeby Mikkelsen) had already shown that they are still in competitive 4-way shape, when they outscored Sequenz with their VAF Warriors team mate Henning Skov at last year's indoor championships. VAF Warriors had represented Denmark at the FAI world meet in Prostejov 2014 and at additional world cups.

CISM Denmark lineup with Stefan Olsen in 2018
The three VAF Warriors were back for this year's outdoor championships with Stefan Olsen, who became a military CISM Denmark member when John Petersen and Martin Soeby Mikkelsen rebuilt the team. Eventually, Anne Mine Petersen joined her former team mates after a hip surgery, as the NSL News reported in August 2020.

CISM Denmark with Stefan Olsen had only a previous 11.0 average in their team records, posted at the Danish Outdoor Nationals 2018, before Anne Mine Petersen's comeback, and before the Sequenz return to 4-way competition.

Sequenz, Denmark's reigning outdoor champions, may have been surprised when CISM Denmark were four points ahead after the first two rounds. They fought back and did not give away any more points until the last two of the ten rounds. In fact, both teams were now tied in 1st place after Round 8.

However, CISM Denmark maintained a very clean 10-round performance across the finish line and upset the reigning champions with the winning 13.5 average. Sequenz is still the qualified national 4-way team and will compete for Denmark in Eloy in October, while the Danish 4-way indoor and outdoor titles are united again, at least for now and until the next indoor championships at the beginning of October.

New 9.8 team record average in AA: Hey Halla in 2019
Denmark's national outdoor championships were also the first time that the AA Class was offered to the country's 4-way teams. Denmark's skydiving federation (DFU) had applied only the AAA and A categories in the past. DFU representative Hans Oksen, who is also an active Sequenz member, told the NSL News that the interest in 4-way competition is growing in Denmark.

Goal of the additional category is to inspire former A Class teams and competitors to move up to AA and attract new teams to join on the A Class level. The step from the smaller A Class dive pool and shorter sequences to AAA Class competition with the complete FAI/ISC dive pool and rules is a large one.

Two teams (Hey Halla, CISM Denmark 2) followed the call, and Hey Halla even posted a new team record average in the new and more challenging AA Class, just two points short of the team's first 10+ average.

Two other A Class teams of the past years (The Fours, Four DK) decided to continue in the same category (A Class) that they have competed in ever since they joined 4-way competition in Denmark. Four DK is now in the team's 12th year of participation at Denmark's national outdoor championships, and the passionate 4-way fans have even not missed one of the annual events since 2011.
