Did You Know...

... that the DeLand Norgies won again at their latest reunion?

posted Aug 11th, 2022 - The NSL News reported a month earlier a year ago that Kjetil Nordin had won national 4-way and 8-way titles in Norway and Denmark both. The timing for his almost annual travel agenda back and forth between the two Scandinavian countries was not favoring a similar situation this year.

Denmark and Norway scheduled their national outdoor championships of 2022 on the same date, and the most passionate 4-way and 8-way competitor had to make a choice where he would compete this time. He staid in Norway and attended both Formation Skydiving events as usual.

He witnessed once again the next comeback of the DeLand Norgies, who won the 4-way competition after only three rounds. The last one had taken place at the national championships five years ago, as the NSL News reported on 2 August 2017.

It was not the complete original lineup who competed last week. Former Arcteryx member Ole Petter Hjelle had to replace Lise Nansen, who was not available for this reunion with her original team mates Pal Kolbenstvedt, Carl-Erik Tuv and Torstein Valen. The original lineup of the DeLand Norgies had won FAI world meet bronze medals in 1999, 2001 and 2003. It was the first time for Ole Petter Hjelle in the Norgies lineup, as it was for Veloce QRF competitor Seth Eriksson on camera.

DeLand Norgies - Agera - Thyra at Norway's Outdoor Nationals 2022
Too many point deductions: Agera
Due to the weather situation, Norway's national 4-way team Agera did not get the opportunity to defend their championship title of 2021 successfully.

They are much better trained than the DeLand Norgies in their preparations for the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022 in October, as the scores before penalties are showing.

However, the Swedish videographer and highly experienced 4-way and 8-way competitor Seth Eriksson kept his team mostly in frame and lost only two points in Round 2, while Agera lost the first two points of each round due to the camera angle and/or grip visibility.

Agera would have won Round 1 and Round 3, and both teams would have been tied without the penalties. More rounds would have given Agera the opportunity to show more of the team's potential.

With the new 4-way title for the DeLand Norgies, original team member Pal Kolbenstvedt keeps adding to his collection of national gold medals. He won his 25th consecutive Norwegian 4-way/8-way title, and he is now the single most awarded national championship athlete in Norwegian team sports, with his total of approx. 60 gold medals.

No gold medals this year: Kjetil Nordin (right)
Pal Kolbenstvedt's original team mates Lise Nansen, Carl-Erik Tuv and Torstein Valen are still just as active and join the reunion events whenever the DeLand Norgies are called to action. They have just not filled the gaps between the reunions as much as Pal Kolbenstvedt has.

Carl-Erik Tuv is strongly engaged in the Formation Skydiving project that Norway launched a few years ago, and national 4-way team Agera is a product of his efforts. He is already preparing the next project, which will possibly bring Norway back to FAI medal level in 4-way Women. His daughter Christiane Wilhelmine Sørfjord Tuv has participated in the FS Project 2022, and she is now a member of the all-female Thyra lineup who finished in 3rd place.

It is a very interesting coincidence that the same two Scandinavian countries, Denmark and Norway, are now in a similar situation. The national teams for this year's FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving, Sequenz in Denmark and Agera in Norway, did not win their respective national outdoor championships last week. However, they will face each other directly in October at Skydive Arizona.

It is also a fact that Kjetil Nordin did not win a Norwegian gold medal this year. He ended up in 4th place with Utopia in 4-way and in 2nd place with the Agera/Thyra 8-way combination "Aghyra". DeLand Norgies won in 8-way, as well, with a selected group of friends. Kjetil Nordin is probably hoping that the event schedule in 2023 will allow him again to compete in both countries...
