Did You Know...

... that the Airbus 4-way lineup defended the German title successfully?

posted Sep 11th, 2022 - Bad weather has kept the 8-way teams on the ground at the USPA Nationals 2022. It is an opportunity for the NSL News to catch up with other events that have taken place in the meantime.

The German Outdoor Nationals took place right after the conclusion of the Dutch Outdoor Nationals and before the start of the USPA Nationals. The total of 22 teams completed all ten scheduled rounds in three categories (AAA - AA - RRR).

The defending champions of Airbus Oceanside Illertissen did not have any seriously opposing contender any longer in Germany, when AtomiX discontinued after finishing in 2nd place at the German Outdoor Nationals last year. AtomiX had won in 2019 and missed the opportunity of the team's first world meet due to the complications that came with the corona virus crisis.

Airbus and AtomiX both had new lineups last year, and Airbus won the 2021 competition after a dramatic 9-round battle and a most exciting Round 10. Airbus continued with the same lineup and defended the German 4-way title successfully at the beginning of the month.

The closest German team at the national championships this year was the German national outdoor team in 4-way Women, Meltemi Oceanside. Airbus and Meltemi both will soon travel with the German delegation to the site of the world outdoor championships in Eloy, Arizona.

Only two members of the German delegation for Eloy have competed at FAI world meets before. Meltemi member Linda Koeb has also been training and competing with the Airbus 8-way lineup since the beginning of the 2018 season. The world meet in Australia was the last time that Airbus 4-way member Thomas Mack competed with the German 8-way team, where he helped out when Thomas Spielvogel had to step back on a short call due to injury.

Thomas Mack was a member of the German national 4-way and 8-way Airbus teams between 2012 and 2017 before he focused on re-forming the Airbus 4-way lineup, which he completed with the beginning of the 2019 season. Two years later Airbus won back the German 4-way title after the dramatic 10-round battle with AtomiX last year, and the new Airbus 4-way lineup defended the title successfully this month with a new team record average.

The previous Airbus lineup (Thomas Mack, Markus Bastuck, Goeran Meyer, Joern Thiele, Andreas Troegele on camera) took the last Top 10 slot in Australia 2018 with a 19.2 average. The current Airbus lineup will probably compete for a higher ranking after a steep progression and the 18.7 average at the German outdoor championships, according to the current unofficial and incomplete NSL Power Rankings.
