Did You Know...

... that only one of three 8-way teams can win the FAI bronze medals?

Very busy days: XPG4 at the USPA Nationals
posted Oct 13th, 2022 - The Indoor Cloud League update on October 3rd explained the delay of the Paraclete XP data for the months of July and August. In the meantime, a new preview of the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022 including the NSL Power Rankings in 4-way Women, provided more evidence for the challenge that XPG4 will be facing in Eloy.

However, Jeana Billings, Brenn Richards and Anna Brunner still managed to add the Indoor Cloud League scores and videos for the month of September to the 2022 leaderboard, after running their ICL event at Paraclete XP in the middle of their outdoor training.

Michelle Karamon was already back in Arizona by then, and Kirk Verner took her slot when the XPG4 3-way performed the two Open Class sequences (AAA/AA) for September. Paraclete XP's Indoor Cloud League team has fully caught up on the 2022 leaderboard, and the XPG4 organizers were facing the next challenge with squeezing in the October event with the new six sequences.

The more important task on hand is coming up at Skydive Arizona very soon, as Round 1 of the outdoor world meet is only a week away. The Indoor Cloud League activities at Paraclete XP will come to a rest, while the ICL team participants will be cheering for their leaders.

Indoor Cloud League September 2022: Paraclete XP Highscores
Three contenders for 8-way bronze medals in Eloy
The difficulties of the double-duties in 4-way Women and 8-way Open for Jeana Billings and Michelle Karamon have been explained comprehensively with feedback from experts in the related NSL News updates. NFTO, the British national team in 4-way Women, have finally confirmed their attendance, and there will probably be three teams in contention for the same position on the very top of the leaderboard.

Nothing has changed in the two other most traditional Formation Skydiving events that the NSL News is covering, 4-way Open and 8-way Open. Arizona Airspeed and XP8 still seem to be able to win in their respective events without serious opposition, and the team members will have time and motivation to support the 4-way Women team of the U.S. delegation.

XP8 will defend the 8-way title successfully for the United States that they inherited from the Golden Knights after the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2018. It will be the 6th consecutive 8-way title for the U.S. delegation, which is still not the historic record. U.S. 8-way teams also won the FAI gold medals eight times between 1985 and 1999.

The Qatar Falcons will most likely win their first FAI silver medals in 8-way, after the 3rd place in Australia 2018. Only the situation behind XP8 and Qatar Falcons may offer some serious competition for the bronze medals.

FAI World Championship Medals between 1985 and 2021
Back at a world meet in 8-way: Manu Sarrazin (center)
Competing for FAI medals at outdoor world championships is nothing extraordinary for France. There has been only one world meet since 1985 when the French delegation did not win a set of 8-way medals. There was no 8-way team from France in Australia 2018, which explains the only miss.

The collection of French 8-way medals includes three consecutive sets of gold (2006 – 2008 - 2010), nine silver, and six bronze medal positions. The last 8-way battle took place in Tanay 2021, where France finished one single point behind XP8 after Round 7.

The situation is different this year, and it was even similar to Australia 2018 for a while. National coach Mathieu Bernier was not planning to send an 8-way team to Eloy, before former French 8-way world champion Manu Sarrazin suggested to represent his country in 8-way with his recreational player-coaching project, Mojo Pamiers.

Manu Sarrazin will have to expect a battle for the bronze medals, as the British national team of many years, MicroClim8, and Germany's Airbus 8-way lineup both have posted meet averages in the past that match the recent French scoring level. Only one of the three teams can win a set of FAI medals, which would be new for the British and the German delegations.
