Did You Know...

... that four of the Tanay 4-way Open teams are back with the same lineups?

Adventure Flyers (Paraguay) at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020
posted Oct 16th, 2022 - Seven of the nine countries who had sent their national 4-way Open Class teams to the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 will be back this week for the next outdoor world meet. Only Kazakhstan and Indonesia will not be represented again in Eloy.

Six of the returning seven countries have the same national teams competing a year later, and four of them have registered the same lineups (Qatar Tigers, Papea Masculino, Out Of The Blue, Adventure Flyers). The United States have a completely different national team after the USPA Nationals 2021, and NMP PCH HayaBusa have a lineup with a new team member (Neal Willems).

The French national team has a 2-2 combination with two members of the previous lineup (Damien Gouriou, Alban Rumolo) and their two new team mates (Mathieu Quizy, Tom Mattoni). The only new national team of the seven returning countries (Arizona Airspeed) will most likely turn the silver medals of 2021 into gold for the U.S. delegation this year.

The four national teams who are coming back without any changes in their lineups seem to have a very good chance to defend their ranking positions successfully a year later, even though the field of 4-way teams is significantly larger (9 in 20021 - 21 in 2022). However, it will surely be much more challenging to finish in the Top 10 next week, as there were only nine 4-way Open Class teams in Tanay.

The same Qatar Tigers lineup of the past decade may even have a chance to improve their position, if they can defeat NMP PCH HayaBusa's new lineup and fend off the new French national team in 4-way Open.

Papea Masculino from Spain claimed the top spot behind the four best 4-way teams in the world last year in Russia. The NSL Power Rankings are showing the Spanish military lineup in contention for the 5th place. It will be much more difficult this year, with at least Chimera and Sweden's Echochamber back in international meet action.

Papea Masculino and Echochamber both have world meet experiences (Australia 2018), while Chimera compete for the first time for the British delegation at an outdoor world meet. However, Chimera have the 7th place at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2019 in their records, which took place at the same location.

The arguably 4th contender for the 5th place is almost totally new in 4-way Open at the FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving. Airbus Oceanside Illertissen have only Outside Center Thomas Mack and team videographer Andreas Trogele with earlier 4-way world meet experiences in the lineup.

HF Flying Circus (right) at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022
Dutch team Out Of The Blue are defending their 7th place at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 with the same lineup. They are expected to be once again a part of the race for Top 10 positions. It will be just as difficult for OOTB to finish again in 7th place as it is for Papea Masculino and the 5th place.

The three expected opponents of the Spanish team alone may claim at least the same position that the Dutch team finished in a year ago (6 - 7 - 8). Then it would be difficult enough to make the Top 10, as four other teams probably have the same goal (Ripper, HF Flying Circus, INIT-Y, Agera).

HF Flying Circus may have the best chances of the other Top 10 contenders with their most consistent lineup. They Czech team impressed the field and the audience with their 6th place at the FAI Indoor World Cup in April this year. The question is how much of their indoor skills they will be able to translate into exits from Twin Otters and into the freefall environment.

The new Australian Ripper lineup have had a year of training together. INIT-Y (Brazil) and Agera (Norway) both are dealing with changes in their lineups. Three of the nine Top 10 contenders will not make it, and there will be pressure in this area of the leaderboard, as well.
