Did You Know...

... that Tuesday featured double-duty practice at Skydive Arizona?

Coaching and video double-duties: Mathieu Bernier
posted Oct 18th, 2022 - The three top contenders for the FAI silver medals in 4-way Open continued with their training on Tuesday, three days before Round 1 of the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022. All four teams in 4-way Women were also in action at the same time.

Three 4-way Women competitors (Jeana Billings, Michelle Karamon, Linda Koeb) are the only participants at the outdoor world meet who take on double-duties in 4-way and 8-way this time. Their teams had to organize their training in a way that allows them to warm up in both events and simulates the meet situation realistically.

It is a procedure and a format that is not being applied under normal training circumstances. The compromised efficiency for each of the two respective teams usually results in separate training days and training camps. Only the few days before the actual event, which is the FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving 2022 in this case, forces the teams to practice what the double-duties require them to do.

The teams with the double-duties (United States, Germany) organized their training days on Tuesday the same way. Both 4-way Women teams, XPG4 and Meltemi, completed their training jumps in the first half of the day. Their 8-way teams, XP8 and Airbus 8, arrived at Skydive Arizona for the afternoon training. Jeana Billings, Michelle Karamon and Linda Koeb were busy all day long, which resembles the situation beginning on Friday.

Meet Director Randy Connell has not finalized the schedule for the competition days yet, while he has presented his planned jump order to the FAI/ISC officials. He confirmed that the jump order begins with the reversed positions on the leaderboard of the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020, and the starting positions of the additional teams will be released soon.

However, the three 4-way Women competitors have to be ready for a competitive situation throughout the whole day, beginning on Friday. NFTO, the British national team in 4-way Women, and France with the Nephtys, focus only on their prime event, and Germany's Meltemi are not expected to be inside of the battle for FAI medals in 4-way Women.

There is serious pressure on all four 4-way Women teams though. NFTO are the top favorite after their 500 training jumps with their strongest lineup, and with coach Andy Grauwels, as they pointed out for the NSL News. Only the gold medals matter for the British team. French national coach Mathieu Bernier, who is filming his 4-way Women team in Eloy, can only win a gold medal in this event.

XPG4 members Jeana Billings and Michelle Karamon can complete the U.S. Sweep in Formation Skydiving only if they win in 4-way Women. Meltemi cannot win a medal in 4-way Women, while Linda Koen has to show her best in 8-way, where Airbus is closer to an FAI medal than any other German team before. They are in a good position with new coach Dan BC, who guided the Italian eX3MO 8-way lineup to 8-way bronze medals in Maubeuge 2008...
