Did You Know...

... that Paraclete XP8 could become the first team to defend a world championship title a year later?

U.S. FS Sweep in 2004: Craig Girard's weather acrobatics
posted Oct 19th, 2022 - On Wednesday, the NSL News was on the mission to find the teams that were mentioned in the preview on October 16th. Tigers (Qatar), Papea Masculino (Spain), Out Of The Blue (Netherlands) and Adventure Flyers (Paraguay) had represented their countries with the same lineups at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 and have the rare opportunity to attend a second FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving a year later.

The same situation has occurred only once before in the history of the sport since 1985. FAI/ISC decided 20 years ago to change the rotation of world meets and world cups on even and odd year numbers. There was a world meet in Gap 2003, and the next one was scheduled for Rijeka 2004 a year later.

None of the world champions of 2003 (France in 4-way Open, V-Max in 4-way Women, Russia in 8-way) were able to win again next year. DeLand Majik (United States), Synchronicity (United States) and Arizona Airspeed (United States) swept the Formation Skydiving events for the U.S. delegation in 2004 instead.

XP8 will be the first team to defend the world championship title a year after winning it in Tanay, Russia. The reigning 8-way world champions have three new team members in their lineup for the upcoming world meet though (Craig Girard, Matt Davidson, Andrew Happick).

Papea Masculino with Andy Grauwels
Qatar Tigers, Papea Masculino and Out Of The Blue are indeed back with their identical lineups of the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020 in August last year. The Adventure Flyers from Paraguay have a change in their lineup, as original team member Leonardo Calvete was not available for the trip to Arizona.

Fortunately, coach Solly Williams, who has been working with the team since the Adventure Flyers visited Skydive DeLand for their first training camps, has an adequate substitute for the inside center slot. Justo Ibarra has trained and competed with the team in the past, and he has been warming up since the Advanture Flyers arrived at Skydive Arizona.

The NSL News also found the Spanish CISM team, Papea Masculino, shortly after their arrival at Skydive Arizona. Their first meeting happened at the coffee shop tent near the landing area. Papea were beginning to accommodate themselves at the event location and at Tent City before they will make a few warmup jumps on Thursday. One team member had not arrived at the time of the video recording. Dutch national team Out Of The Blue were in full training swing on Tuesday to prepare for the expected tough battle for the Top 10 positions.

The latest NSL-TV Unfiltered video also features the comeback of former NMP PCH HayaBusa member Andy Grauwels on NSL-TV. He has been coaching NFTO to the position of the top contender in 4-way Women.
