Did You Know...

... that HF Flying Circus connect Czech 4-way history, presence and future?

posted Nov 3rd, 2022 - The NSL News mentioned with the last Indoor Cloud League update from the Czech Republic on October 7th that the country's national team in 4-way Open, HF Flying Circus, was still helping out Jan Klapka's ICL team at the Hurricane Factory with the September scores for the two Open Class sequences (AAA/AA) before traveling to Skydive Arizona and the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022.

It would be the first outdoor world meet for HF Flying Circus, and the team's participation in Eloy was also resuming the Czech Republic's outdoor presence at FAI World Championships of Formation Skydiving. The Czech Republic has been a strong player at FAI/ISC indoor events and had teams at world meets and world cups regularly since FAI/ISC adopted indoor competition in 2014.

Jan Klapka's Czech junior and senior teams began participating at Indoor Cloud League events in 2013 and soon became a leader in the 4-way Junior events, together with the French Aerokart Ak'demie junior project.

HF Flying Circus have been the major link between indoor and outdoor training and competition in the Czech Republic since the team was founded in 2014, naturally with a dominating indoor presence after the Hurricane Factory in Prague opened the doors. The weather situation in the Czech Republic makes it difficult to train outdoors in the winter months.

HF Flying Circus could not train enough to be as well prepared for outdoor competition as they were when they won the FAI bronzed medals of the European Indoor Championships at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022. The record number of 20 point deductions, the heaviest loss of all teams at the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022, were a result of the lack of outdoor training.

The penalties kept the Czech team from battling outdoors with the same teams they had met around the Top 10 at the indoor competition in April (Papea, Out OF The Blue, Echochamber). The situation was similar for the Brazilian indoor experts of INIT-Y, who suffered 17 point deductions, the highest number after HF Flying Circus.

However, the 14.1 average after the 20 point deductions is still close to the last and highest scoring numbers of a Czech team at a world meet. Any 15+ or even 16+ average would have been a new record number, for a Czech team as well as for HF Flying Circus. The 14th place in Eloy is at least still the best placement of a Czech team at an outdoor world meet.

HF Flying Circus are also connecting indirectly with the last Czech national 4-way team in Dubai 2012, Lize. Team member Jan Lukavec became Jan Klapka's team mate with the HF Bad Boys, and together they competed numerous times next to HF Flying Circus, who eventually outscored the former Czech national team in 4-way Open.

Filip Lukavec with Dream Team at Czech Outdoor Nationals 2022
The connection between HF Flying Circus and Jan Lukavec still goes beyond Lize and Bad Boys, who are both not training or competing any longer. Jan Lukavec's son Filip is now on the same leaderboards with the current national team in 4-way Open.

Filip Lukavec has been in the point slot for the HF Chameleons since the 4-way junior team was put together in 2017. The Chameleons started in the A Class of 2017 and moved up to AA a year later. They won the FAI bronze medals in 4-way Junior (AA) at the indoor world cup in April, after they had already trained the AAA Class dive pool for a year.

HF Chameleons and HF Flying Rebels, the 4-way Junior world cup champions, are now challenging each other on the AAA Class leaderboard, even though both teams are still eligible for FAI medals in 4-way Junior with their new lineups. The Rebels won the October duel by a point (37 - 36) while Chameleons had the higher score for the AA sequence. Both could not (yet) outscore the HF Cubs, who had a comeback in October, for the AAA sequence.

Filip Lukavec has not only made the last step into the AAA Class with the HF Chameleons. He also competed with the Dream Team at the Czech Outdoor Nationals 2022, as the NSL News reported on October 7th. The next duel between the two junior teams will take place next week at the Hurricane Factory with the season opener of the Czech Tunnel League.
