... that Flyspot Sky4Four and HF Flying Circus dueled at their first outdoor world meet?

posted Nov 15th, 2022 - The NSL News has recently covered the transition from outdoor to indoor training and competition, and vice versa, as the first and easier part of this transition is happening right now. The outdoor competition season is basically over after the national championships and the major FAI/ISC events, either a world championship or a world cup.

Some teams continue with regular outdoor training throughout the whole winter season, which usually requires traveling to a location where the weather conditions are good enough. It is worth the effort, as it makes the unavoidable reverse transition to outdoor training and competition easier and breaks the less attractive indoor routine.

The NSL News mentioned that the Czech national team in 4-way Open, HF Flying Circus, were the first with initiating the transition, as the first indoor meet of the Czech Tunnel League was scheduled for the beginning of November, little over two weeks after Round 10 of the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022.

HF Flying Circus actually beat Poland's national team, Flyspot Sky4Four, only by two days to the quickest transition to an indoor competition. Sky4Four competed right next to HF Flying Circus at Skydive Arizona, and both teams were aiming at a Top 10 position.

Sky4Four after Round 10 at Skydive Arizona
It was only a 2-day difference that made the Czech team the first one to switch from outdoor to indoor competition. The Flyspot Open 2022 was scheduled to begin on Friday last week, two days after HF Flying Circus completed their ten rounds at the Hurricane Factory in Prague.

The NSL News reported yesterday that the two Czech junior teams HF Flying Rebels and HF Chameleons competed at both events, together with HF Flying Circus member Martina Vavackova, who filled an open slot for the Moravian Cats. Jan Klapka traveled to Poland with his 4-way juniors, as well, after competing on Wednesday with his M Team.

Flyspot Sky4Four mastered both environments and the transition very well. The final rankings at the outdoor world meet, after the 10-round duel between the Czech and the Polish teams, meant that Sky4Four had defeated HF Flying Circus for the first time.

HF Flying Circus had won all previous indoor meets that both teams attended, and the showdown in Eloy was the first time that the same duel took place at a dropzone with exits from jump planes.

Flyspot Sky4Four after Round 10 at the Flyspot Open 2022
Flying Circus and Sky4Four both attended their first world meet, and the stage was set perfectly for their first outdoor duel. Poland's national team won the duel with the cleaner performance and benefited to a certain extent from the bad luck that the Czech team had with their video footage in Round 2. The 7-point loss alone was enough to fall well behind.

However, HF Flying Circus recovered to get back into the duel. There was only a 2-point difference before they lost another five points in Round 9. SkyFour lost a total of eight points, while Flying Circus ended up with the highest number of point deductions (20) of the whole 4-way field.

Sky4Four almost matched their highest outdoor average of 2021 (15.0) while Flying Circus still came close to the team's own 15.0 record average of 2019.

The Polish national team in 4-way Open is one of the busiest 4-way teams in the world, too. There is no doubt that Sky4Four and Flying Circus will meet each other again at some place and some time soon. Sky4Four will be eager to copy the outcome of the outdoor competition, while Flying Circus want to defend their indoor top position. They posted a 23.7 average in Prague last week, two days before Sky4Four followed up with a 21.8 in Katowice.
