Did You Know...

... that the 8-way competition at the Weembinamic had its own Super Sequence?

8-way awards at the Weembinamic 2022: Ultim8 Weembi
posted Dec 11th, 2022 - The elimination format of the 8-way competition at the Weembinamic 2022 did not have much of an impact on the outcome that the traditional leaderboard would show, at least not in the upper third of the final rankings.

The 8-way teams in the Top 4 positions matched the final standings after the last two elimination rounds (Rounds 9 - 10), which have the potential to turn the results of the first eight rounds upside down. The dueling teams enter the finals with clean sheets, and the winner of the two rounds is also the winner of the tournament.

It was very different in 4-way where the Unicorns were 11 points ahead of FCUK after the first eight rounds, and they won Round 9 by a point, as well. Then they lost the Super Sequence in Round 10 by three points, and FCUK, previously with one highscore for a round (5) won the Weembinamic 2022. Unicorns were still nine points ahead after Round 10 on the traditional leaderboard.

Julien Degen copied his 4-way engagement and competed with four different 8-way teams, as well, for a total of 80 meet rounds on the Weembinamic weekend. The double-duties in 4-way and 8-way with the 80 rounds did not seem to bother him much, as he won both events, on the traditional leaderboards and with the elimination format both.

French delegation at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020
The French teams Les Souillonnes, Julien Degen's second 8-way team, and After 8 Weembi finished tied in 4th place and did not need an extra round to break the tie. Les Souillonnes had already secured the 4th place by making it into the last duel with XPG8, the all-female U.S. team. XPG8/QRF8 dominated the finals and won the last two rounds by a total of seven points.

The teams in the first two places were packed with French world champions and world-class competitors, including members of the French national teams at the FAI Tanay Mondial. France and Airspeed XP8 had battled in Russia over seven rounds, and the U.S. team won by a point when the meet had to be called due to the weather situation.

Weembi's Ultim8 lineup included Alban Rumolo, who competed in 4-way and 8-way in Tanay and has continued in the French 4-way Open Class team with his Ultim8 team mate Mathieu Quizy. Julien Degen, Roy Janssen, Julien Losantos and Erwan Pouliquen have collected a number of FAI gold medals in 4-way and 8-way in their careers.

Julien Degen did not have a slot in the Unexpected Weembi Team, who were challenging Weembi's Ultim8 lineup. He was facing members of the French national team in 4-way Women (Pamela Lissajoux, Elise Poindron, Jessica Thebault) who had 8-way guidance by former 8-way world champions Arnaud Mille and Bruno Perin. Ultim8 won with the higher score in Round 9, after they tied in Round 10.

French world-record lineup at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2019
Julien Degen had a similar feast for the 8-way teams in Round 10 as he had set it up in 4-way. The fastest sequence of the 10-round competition was waiting in Round 10. The Super Sequence (3,1,E) offered the same open end, as the previous scores could all be overturned in just one round. However, the two lineups of French top competitors tied the round that was most likely not to, and Ultim8 won with the highscore in Round 9.

There was additional spice in Round 10. Julien Degen was not in the French lineup that posted the highest 8-way score in history with the 44-pointer in Round 6 (M,Q,J,16) of the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019. It was his opportunity to score higher than Martial Ferre, who guided the French 2019 lineup to the 8-way record number.

Martial Ferre himself was there to watch the challenge. He competed with two of his Veloce QRF lineups who dueled with each other in Rounds 7 and 8. Pamela Lissajoux (Unexpected Weembi Team) and Alban Rumolo (Weembi Ultim8) had their own opportunities to tie or improve their own world record, and they both finished short by one point.

More observers of the last Super Sequence round were watching very carefully. Jeana Billings (XPG8/QRF8), Brian Krause (QRF 3) and Kirk Verner (QRF 5) were members of the XP8 lineup who posted their own 43-pointer in 2019 at the same place. Ultim8 Weembi and Unexpected Weembi Team both ended up with 43-pointers, and Martial Ferre still owns the highest 8-way score for a single round.
