Did You Know...

... that the HF Chameleons lead by seven points after 38 competition rounds?

Gold and bronze at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022
posted Dec 18th, 2022 - The NSL News has followed the 4-way junior teams in the Czech Republic since Jan Klapka launched the school project years ago. His efforts resulted in a 4-way Junior world championship title, the first FAI gold medals for a team from the Czech Republic. The HF Cubs, 4-way Junior world champions of 2019, are now one of the top contenders for FAI gold medals in 4-way Women at the next indoor world championship in Slovakia next April.

There was no internal Czech qualification necessary before the 2019 event at Weembi Lille, as the HF Cubs were far ahead of all the other Czech junior teams at that time. Now the HF Cubs have at least high-level Czech competition in the AAA Class, where HF Flying Circus represent the country in 4-way Open with the team's 2-2 mixed-gender indoor and outdoor lineup.

The situation is different in the run-up to the 4-way Junior competition at the next indoor world championship, where HF Flying Rebels and HF Chameleons both want to compete for the Czech 4-way delegation. They did so at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 in Charleroi, where FAI/ISC allow registration of up to four teams per nation.

HF Flying Rebels won FAI's 4-way Junior gold medals in Charleroi, and HF Chameleons added the bronze medals to the collection of the Czech delegation. This time there is only one slot available for the 4-way Junior competition in Slovakia, and the two Czech teams have to convince Jan Klapka that one of them is the more promising national team for the event.

HF Chameleons - HF Flying Rebels at the ISR Grand Prix 2022
HF Flying Rebels at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022
The NSL News has pointed out the internal Czech run-up in 4-way Junior to the indoor world championship before. The most recent update was posted on November 14th after HF Flying Rebels and HF Chameleons both had completed their first two 10-round meets of the new Czech indoor winter season, the first one on their home turf at the Hurricane Factory in Prague, followed immediately by the Flyspot Open in Poland.

The race for the 4-way Junior slot in the Czech delegation for the indoor world championship was just as tight at the first two duels as Jan Klapka was expecting it. He had made a few adjustments of the lineups, which brought the teams closer to each other. The changes were necessary as not all Czech 4-way juniors at the indoor world cup this year would be eligible in April 2023.

The Chameleons won the first meet of the indoor winter season in November by eleven points (204 - 193), the Flying Rebels tied the game at the Flyspot Open (197 - 192).

Both teams then traveled to Roosendaal in the Netherlands a few weeks later and still in November. Both placed in the Top 10 of the AAA Class leaderboard with a total of 21 teams, and the Chameleons took back the top spot in the Czech duel (161 - 148), this time after only eight rounds in Roosendaal.

The same two Czech 4-way Junior teams then had over two weeks to get ready for the next duel on their journey to Slovakia for one of them. The second meet of the Czech Tunnel League was scheduled for December 14th, and the Flying Rebels tied the game once again, this time with a 12-point advantage after the next ten rounds (203 - 191).

The Chameleons are seven points ahead (748 - 741) for the total of the four meets that both teams have attended. The 18.5 average and 13-point loss after the eight rounds in Roosendaal hurt the Flying Rebels records severely, and the recovery at the next duel was probably important for the three reigning world cup champions (Denisa Jeziakova, Krystof Rulf, Martin Stránský) with new team mate Michal Mikulíšek.

The Chameleons have been training and competing with the same lineup who won the FAI bronze medals in Charleroi with a 24.9 average for the eight AA Class sequences. They have lifted their AAA Class scoring level from 17.2 in May 2022 to 19.1 in December.

Jan Klapka still has plenty of time before he has to make the final decision who will compete for the Czech Republic in Slovakia. The Czech teams have five more 10-round meets ahead of them between the beginning of the new year and Round 1 in 4-way Junior (AA) at the indoor world championship.
