Did You Know...

... that IFS Moscow won the Russian Indoor Nationals 2022?

FAI bronze medals in 4-way Junior at Weembi Lille 2019
posted Dec 20th, 2022 - The NSL News reported on April 23rd how the Russian delegation for the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 was prepared to be in medal contention in all 4-way categories at Airspace Charleroi. In fact, Russia had registered the largest delegation for the three horizontal events, 4-way Open, 4-way Women, 4-way Junior, including the 4-way Women world champions at the FAI Tanay Mondial, Bubbles.

The NSL News preview with the Power Rankings on March 15th did not include the seven Russian teams any longer, after FAI/ISC had decided to "suspend the members of Russia and Belarus with immediate effect" from the event. No teams from Russia have attended events outside of their country ever since.

However, they still continued with domestic 4-way events after the Small Party's Indoor Cup in March. The 2nd Russian Indoor Cup in April was completed just two weeks after the FAI Indoor World Cup in Charleroi.

Russia also tried to hold the national outdoor championships in Kolomna in September, where bad weather and trouble with the jump planes interfered with the completion of the event.

In the meantime, the construction of a new windtunnel with a 17-foot flying chamber was successfully completed in the city of Komerovo, which was one of the event locations for the FAI Tanay Mondial. This new windtunnel became the hosting location for Russia's national indoor championship.

The event was completed at the beginning of the month, and the leaderboards of the two horizontal 4-way categories (AAA/AA) are showing increasing participation, compared to last year's national championships in November.

The reigning outdoor world champions in 4-way Women, Bubbles, were on the very top of the Russian AAA indoor leaderboard of 2021, as well. However, Bubbles did not follow up on their 29.6 and 30.8 averages in November 2021 and April 2022, and IFS Moscow now won the national indoor title, four points ahead of a modified VDV lineup.

Russia had won a set of medals only in 4-way Junior at the last FAI Indoor World Championship at Weembi Lille 2019. There was a strong presence of Russian 4-way juniors at the national indoor championships at the beginning of this month.

Members of the Russian 4-way Junior lineup of 2019 (Airborne Club) posted scores on the AAA Class leaderboard with a young senior lineup this month. There were still three other teams with lineups under the age of 18 on the AAA Class leaderboard: Military Sports Club, SK Paratroopers and NB-Sky, who did not continue after the first round.

The AA Class leaderboard did not feature additional 4-way juniors, even though there was young talent in the three high-scoring Kuzbass lineups. Andrey Barabash, member of the Tanay 8-way team who won FAI bronze medals in Tanay last year, launched a Formation Skydiving school project as soon as the new windtunnel opened the doors.

The project includes ten young 4-way competitors (age 20-24) who have player-coaches of the Tanay 8-way team in their lineups for 2-2 combinations. Bubbles member Alena Chistova is the project's head coach.

Vasily Korotkov, Evgeny Stashchenko (Kuzbass 1), Dmitry Samokhval, Alexey Minaev (Kuzbass 2), Vladimir Pavlenko and Alena Chistova (Kuzbass 3) were the six player-coaches for the three project lineups at the national indoor championships. Tanay 8 member Sergey Yalpaev was player-coach for NPT Suzaku, Alexander Tychinskiy for Nomads, Valentin Ilin for another Kuzbass lineup. Only Tanay 8 member Andrey Barabash did not compete. Alena Chistova's Bubbles team mate Olga Bykova finished in 3rd place with 2x2 on the AAA Class leaderboard.
