Did You Know...

... that South Africa's Jazz Republic qualified for Slovakia in the Netherlands?

Jazz Republic at the ISR Grand Prix 2022
posted Jan 5th, 2023 - Claire King and Dirk Venter, owners and operators of the InTime scoring system, visit many 4-way and 8-way competitions, not only to make sure that their technology is well applied and functional. Both are also FAI judges and regulars in the judging panels of FAI/ISC events.

It's been a while though since their last competition with Jazz Republic, their South African 4-way team. The World Challenge 2019 was the last event that they attended as 4-way competitors before the corona virus break and the comeback at the ISR Grand Prix in November 2022.

The World Challenge in Bedford used to be the qualification event for South African teams who had plans to represent their country at FAI/ISC indoor world championships or indoor world cups. There was no South African team at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2019, even though Jazz Republic competed in Bedford in 2018 and 2019. They were operating the InTime judging system at Weembi Lille, and no other team from South Africa traveled to Europe in April 2019.

The World Challenge 2019 was the last time that Paul Mayer hosted the event at Twinwoods Adventure in Bedford, and South Africa needed a new qualifier for the FAI/ISC events. The ISR Grand Prix 2022 was eventually selected as the South African qualification event for the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023 in April.

The new qualification event was scheduled for a better timing, too. The ISR Grand Prix is taking place at the beginning of the indoor season, and the winner of the qualification has enough time to prepare for the FAI/ISC indoor events. However, Jazz Republic have not decided yet whether they will compete for South Africa in Slovakia or not. It is only an option at this point in time.

Jazz Republic had a South African opponent this time. Ascension joined the AAA Class leaderboard in Roosendaal, while they could not really challenge Jazz Republic for the national indoor championship title and the potential slot at the indoor world championship.

The current Jazz Republic lineup came together for the first time in 2015 and benefited from their experiences together, even though there has not been much indoor training for the team. In fact, the three hours of tunnel time at Weembi Lille before the ISR Grand Prix was the first team training since the beginning of 2019.

Weembi Lille's 17-foot flying chamber does not prepare a 4-way team very well for the significantly smaller space in Roosendaal, and Jazz Republic could not get anywhere close to their previous scoring level. They enjoyed the special atmosphere of the ISR Grand Prix anyway, and the results could be a motivation to go back to the previous 21+ scoring level at the indoor world championship...
