Did You Know...

... that SNE Fly Girls won the SkyVenture New Hampshire Indoor Fest 2023?

posted Jan 28th, 2023 - The last preview before Round 1 at the SkyVenture New Hampshire Indoor Fest 2023 included an overview of the 19 registered teams on January 17th. It was posted at the beginning of the week that would feature the annual event on Saturday, January 21st.

It turned out that seven more teams signed up in time, and the total of 26 teams confirmed the successful comeback of the event. 13 teams had followed the call for the comeback last year after the corona virus break, and the participation doubled a week ago.

36 teams had competed at SkyVenture New Hampshire's last Indoor Fest in 2020 before the implications of the pandemic interfered too much, and this year's participation indicates that the event is on the way back to the previous popularity and size.

The 2020 event was also the last one where the Flying Spaghetti Monsters posted AAA Class scores. In fact, most of the AAA/Open Class competitors of the four teams in this category last week were on the same leaderboard three years ago, even though the team names and the lineups were different. SNE Fly Girls competed under the same name that they started with at the same event in 2018, and the Flying Spaghetti Monsters were back with the same name, as well, despite a change in the lineup.

Current SNE Fly Girls lineup in 2019
The current lineup of the SNE Fly Girls came together in 2019 and has not changed ever since, neither indoors nor outdoors, and the consistency was rewarded with the 1st place on the AAA Class leaderboard and a new indoor team record average.

Even the highly experienced Pretty Gnarly 4-way competitors, with meet director and USPA 4-way Open Class bronze medalist of 2019, Ben Liston, in the lineup (Doug Hendrix, John Silva, Andrew Yin) were probably surprised by the SNE Fly Girls who eventually won by five points after a very exciting finish.

The 5-point lead of SNE Fly Girls after Round 4 had slowly melted down to a 1-point advantage before going into Round 10, and Pretty Gnarly had the momentum after three consecutive highscores. However, the U.S. 4-way Women team for the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023 in August finished with their highest score for a single round at the right time and won the AAA Class competition.

Ben Liston was back this year with his original Mass Defiance team mate John Silva and his indoor team mate of 2020, Doug Hendrix (Total Compliance). Andrew Yin completed the lineup. Ben Liston, Doug Handrix and Andrew Yin were also team mates with NE Chicken Bolts in 2021.

While meet director Ben Liston's Pretty Gnarly lineup battled with SNE Fly Girls for the top position on the AAA/Open Class leaderboard, this year's Flying Spaghetti Monsters, with three members of their last visit at SkyVenture New Hampshire in 2020, had their own duel for the 3rd place with Cornerstone Plus.

Roger Cunha, Dave Grabowski and Andre Van Heerden were back with Chris Diamantes this year, who replaced Alex Jordaan of the 2020 lineup. Colleen and Brian Touhey competed with Jamie Caldwell and Dan Schultz for Cornerstone Plus, after DeOrbit Burn in 2016 and 2017, LMNOP in 2019, and Baby Yoda in 2022.

Colleen and Brian Touhey had also won outdoor bronze medals in the AAA/Advanced Class competition of the USPA Nationals 2019.

Cornerstone Plus were warmed up a little bit too late to take the 3rd place in the second duel on the AAA/Open Class leaderboard. Flying Spaghetti Monsters had already worked out a 9-point lead before Cornerstone Plus knew each other well enough. They won the total for the last four rounds by one point, which was not enough to catch up with the Monsters.
