Did You Know...

... that almost all 4-way Open competitors completed 20 rounds at SkyVenture New Hampshire?

Meet management - Pretty Gnarly - Brian is 50: Ben Liston
posted Feb 2nd, 2023 - The second category at the SkyVenture New Hampshire Indoor Fest is officially called the Advanced Class, while it is applying the rules of the AA/Intermediate Class at USPA Nationals and at events of the National Skydiving League.

Ben Liston, annual meet director and creator of the event, always considers the specifics of the 4-way dive pool in relationship to the 12-foot flying chamber at SkyVenture New Hampshire when he generates the competition draw. The AAA/Open Class sequences could all be drawn for any FAI/ISC/USPA/NSL event, even though some blocks are excluded. 17 of the 22 blocks were drawn this year, including five of the six slot-switchers.

Ben Liston's Advanced Class sequences could also be drawn for 4-way Junior, AA and Intermediate Class at FAI/ISC/USPA/NSL events, while the selection of blocks is so reduced that some of them may appear twice in a 10-round competition. This year's Advanced Class teams performed two blocks twice (6 and 7) in the ten rounds. Several random formations had to be used twice, as well, for the 4- to 5-point sequences in this category.

The event-specific rules also allow competitors to sign up for more than one team, which is not unusual at all and is just as popular at other events too. However, the double-duties usually happen across different leaderboards, and the AAA/Open Class competitors are guiding other teams often as player-coaches.

Murders & Acquisitions - Left On Red at the SkyVenture New Hampshire Indoor Fest
Two 1st places: Fly Girl Jill Lavacchia with Murders & Acquisitions
This year's SkyVenture New Hampshire Indoor Fest created a winner in two categories, which is also not new to the event. SNE Fly Girls member Jill Lavacchia performed her second set of ten competition rounds with the AA/Advanced Class winner Murders & Acquisitions.

She was under competition pressure in both events. The NSL News reported on January 28th how the 5-point lead of SNE Fly Girls after Round 4 in AAA/Open had slowly melted down to a 1-point advantage before going into Round 10, where Pretty Gnarly with meet director Ben Liston had the momentum after three consecutive highscores.

At the same time, her AA/Advanced Class team Murders & Acquisitions was under pressure, as well, as her Open Class opponent Andrew Yin had guided Left On Red to a 3-point lead after Round 6. However, Murders & Acquisitions created enough breathing space in Round 8 (28 - 16), and Jill Lavacchia could focus on the exciting duel of her own team with Pretty Gnarly.

Two more SNE Fly Girls (Nicole Bedard, Jennifer Cook) were also back with their Snatch Force on the AA/Advanced Class leaderboard. The 4th SNE Fly Girl, Monique Lai, won her second gold medal with Brane Damage in the third category, the Intermediate Class.

Good Point - SNE Grip Switch at the SkyVenture New Hampshire Indoor Fest
Two 1st places: Fly Girl Monique Lai with Brane Damage
Pretty Gnarly member Doug Hendrix was player-coaching Ain't First You're Last on the same Intermediate Class leaderboard, and his Open Class team mate Ben Liston also needed a second team to spend the time between managing the meet and his ten rounds with Pretty Gnarly, all on the same Saturday.

Three Flying Spaghetti Monster members (Roger Cunha, Chris Diamantes, Dave Grabowski) had their own double-duties, as well as all four Cornerstone Plus members. Jamie Caldwell had her second battle for medals with Good Point and SDC Rhythm XP member Doug Barron in the lineup.

Her competition for the 3rd place on the Advanced Class leaderboard turned out to be two points closer (178 - 172) than the one in 4-way Open (150 - 158). She won bronze medals with Doug Barron and Good Point and ended up in 4th place with Cornerstone Plus.

SNE Gripswitch were the opponent in 4-way Advanced and completed their first 10-round competition. They had won the A/Beginner Class gold medals at the USPA Nationals 2022, where they performed most of the blocks in the Advanced Class at SkyVenture New Hampshire. Only two blocks were new (14, 15) while most of the sequences were longer. SNE Gripswitch have to compete in AA/Intermediate this year, after winning at the USPA Nationals in September.
