Did You Know...

... that the new XPG4 lineup has the indoor championship and two more months of training before Slovakia?

XPG4 indoor training with Niklas Hemlin at Paraclete XP
posted Feb 7th, 2023 - The NSL News reported the change in the lineup of the U.S. national team in 4-way Women, Paraclete XPG4, with the update on January 10th. Jeana Billings continues only in 8-way with XP8, while Michelle Karamon stepped out of the 8-way lineup and moved to XPG4's outside center position. Shannon Catalano is the new XPG4 point.

The NSL News visited Paraclete XP when XP8 and XPG4 were both training for the first time with their new lineups. The XP8 update was posted on February 1st at the end of the team's first training day, including NSL Live Talk with Jeana Billings and Kirk Verner.

XPG4 were in the middle of their first training camp, and Arizona Airspeed's Niklas Hemlin was back in the coaching position that he had before the change in the lineup.

There was not enough time for NSL Live Talk with the new lineup on a busy training day, and the first conversation with the team will most likely take place on the weekend of the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2023 later this month. However, the NSL-TV Unfiltered video clip is showing the team in action from several different perspectives with the first preparations for the upcoming indoor competitions.

The first competition for the new lineup is the national indoor championship at Paraclete XP at the end of next week, followed by the FAI Indoor World Championship in April. The two events have very different levels of importance for XPG4, which may fit perfectly to the agenda of the new lineup.

Of course, XPG4 aim at defending their status as the national 4-way team in 4-way Women by outscoring all other U.S. teams in this FAI category at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship, as they have every year since 2019. In fact, XPG4 had only little opposition in the past, first by Perris 4ce/Force in 2019 (237 - 180), with Shannon Catalano in Christy Frikken's team from Perris, then again by Aviatrixx in 2020 (215 - 201) and in 2021 (246 - 183).

Even if any other 4-way Women teams compete next week and manage to outscore the well trained XPG4 lineup by then, this year's national indoor championship is the qualification for the next FAI Indoor World Cup in 2024, which allows a total of up to four teams to compete for their respective countries. There will obviously not be much pressure on the new XPG4 lineup in their home chamber, and the event serves mostly to collect meet experiences in the run-up to the indoor world championship in April.

XPG4 indoor training with Niklas Hemlin at Paraclete XP
Last year's Paraclete XP Indoor Championship qualified XPG4 as the U.S. national team in 4-way Women for the upcoming indoor world championship. The 2022 lineup did not have any opposition in this category and finished in 2nd place on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard with the highest team average since 2019.

Last year's new lineup, with Anna Brunner replacing Morgan Womble, did not travel to Belgium to compete at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 in Charleroi, where most of the upcoming opponents in 4-way Women posted their impressive indoor scoring numbers. The new XPG4 lineup with Shannon Catalano has no international meet experiences at all.

Michelle Karamon competed with XPG4 for the U.S. delegation at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2019 and won bronze medals behind Nephtys (France) and NFTO (Great Britain). Last year's XPG4 lineup also won bronze medals at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022. However, the 4-way Women indoor opposition in Slovakia will be even stronger, as the HF Cubs juniors of 2019 are now competing in the 4-way senior categories.

XPG4 have the opportunity for the first competition experiences with the new lineup at Paraclete XP. Two more months will then be left for indoor training only before they will meet the world's strongest teams in 4-way Women in Slovakia.
