Did You Know...

Southwest Skydving League medals in 2000
posted Feb 8th, 2023 - The NSL News update of Christy Frikken's new position as the Southern California Skydiving League director on February 5th included a brief look back into the SCSL history. The story explained that the league started as a part of the Southwest Skydiving League, which eventually split up into the northern (NCSL) and the southern part (SCSL), and a new league in Arizona.

The same NSL News update mentioned that both most recent SCSL directors, Josh Hall and Christy Frikken, were participating in the league events at that time with their 4-way team Perris Fury. The Southwest Skydiving League was already in its 6th year when Christy Frikken and Josh Hall attended their first competition with Perris Fury in March 2005, with Dan BC and Uli Stuewe in the lineup, Karen Lewis on camera.

The NSL News published earlier updates from the archives that included the first years of the Southwest Skydiving League, as well. In fact, the story on 30 April 2021 featured the very new commentary after the first meet of the Southwest Skydiving League in March 2000.

The results of the next meet in April 2000 were also saved in the archives, which have now been added to the database as a new event. Even the competition draw of the March meet was fully available, while the numbers and letters are not identical with the blocks and random formations of the current 4-way dive pool.

The three teams on the top of the AAA Class leaderboard in April 2000, and Intermediate Class team Elsinore Un4Given, competed later the same year at the USPA Nationals 2000. The Southwest Skydiving League offered four more meets before the national championships, and the SWSL teams could get familiar with the logistics of 4-way competition.

Elsinore Matrix in action over Skydive Elsinore

NSL News on 2 May 2000: Did You Know... that Elsinore Matrix scored 16.2 average at the second Southwest Skydiving League meet?

The NSL News pointed out the 16.2 average of home team Elsinore Matrix a few days after the completion of the meet on 2 May 2000:

"A total number of eight teams competed at the second season meet of the Southwest Skydiving League. Elsinore Skydiving was hosting the event last weekend. The Elsinore home team Matrix kept their progression going throughout the first three competitions this year, and they posted a new team record average of 16.2 after the six rounds.

Matrix had scored 14.2 at the Valentine's Meet in February and 15.5 at the season opener of the Southwest Skydiving League in March. The 16.2 average at the April meet was supported by a 23 in Round 3, with the fastest sequence of the competition.

The sequence for this round was Bundy-Unipod-Side Buddies-Side Buddies-Twins. Other Matrix scores in Round 4 and Round 6 are indicating that the team is on an upswing. Veteran and former Airspeed member John Hamilton formed the full-time team with Todd Hawkins, Allan Brooks and Bob Healy. Team videographer is Truman Brooks.

Stratos4 won the Open/Advanced Class competition after handicap, finishing with a 7.5 average before handicap. Perris Pas DeQuatre scored the highest average of the Recreational Class with a 6.8 average. After handicap, Un4Given won the first place in this category. The new league rankings will be posted soon at the SSL website. The new rankings and scores overview can be viewed at the NSL scoring page. Blue Skies - Go Compete

The numbers and letters of the competition draw were not the only different factors in 4-way competition at that time. The dive pool consisted of 24 blocks, and the blocks and random formations were other ones compared to the most recent and current edition.

Changes in the dive pool happened much more frequently, and the teams had to adjust to the changes on a regular basis. The 4-way dive pool has been unchanged and reliable for several years now, and 4-way teams on all experience levels can trust the consistency.

The categories at USPA Nationals were in motion at that time, as well. USPA had introduced the Advanced Class at the national championships of 1999, and the competition draw was not yet identical with the one of the Open Class. The Intermediate Class sequences were different, as well, and resembled more the A Class of the National Skydiving League.

4-way Open and 4-way Advanced Class teams finally used the same competition draw for the first time in 1999 and had their own sets of USPA medals, which has been consistent ever since. Teams in the Intermediate Class only had shorter sequences for each round, while the same 24 blocks of the complete dive pool were used for the draw. The Intermediate Class format changed in 2000 when teams performed six competition rounds with a limited dive pool, still very similar to the A Class and USPA's current 4-way Beginner Class. The same format was used in 2001, and the final change to the current AA/Intermediate Class format happened in 2002.
