Did You Know...

... that the New England Skydiving League was launched in 2000?

Final comeback preparations: Northern California Skydiving League
posted Feb 10th, 2023 - The recent NSL News updates that reported the comeback of 4-way leagues in the NSL Network seem to initiate interest in other areas of the United States, as well. It began with the Great Lakes Skydiving League with the announcement of a schedule for the 2023 season on January 16th, which was followed soon by the update from Southern California and the history of the Southwest Skydiving League.

In the meantime, Lori Conner, previous director of the Northern California Skydiving League has confirmed a schedule for the 2023 season, as well, and the NSL News will follow up with more details very soon.

The comeback of the Northern California Skydiving League received some attention on the other side of the United States, as well. In fact, the distance between Northern California on the west coast and New England on the east coast could hardly be much longer. The comeback of the New England/Northeast Skydiving League is at least a topic of discussion in the area.

The history of the New England Skydiving League did not only begin when the current design of the NSL website was created by Craig Buxton in 2003, with the first scores from New England posted in 2006. The leaderboard of the NESL May meet of 2006 is showing some very interesting information, while the League's first meet was actually held in July 2000, the same year when Southwest Skydiving League and Great Lakes Skydiving League joined the NSL 4-way Network.

The interesting NESL leaderboard of May 2006 was featuring the members of the original Mass Defiance lineup as player-coaches for the other teams, Ben Liston with the AAA Class winner, Brian Stephens and Dennis Rook, with Mass Defiance team videographer Steve "Scuba" Feldman on camera, right behind.

Jim Rees competed with Two and Half Mikes and finished in 3rd place behind his Mass Defiance team mates. Even the complete original lineup, USPA Advanced Class champions of 2005, competed at NESL meets at that time.

The lineups of the teams on the May 2006 leaderboard offered very interesting additional information. Dennis Rook was in the First Jump Course lineup, who would later join Mass Defiance as a full member before joining Arizona Airspeed and winning a USPA 8-way gold medal in 2009. There was also a young Rookie Class competitor in Michelle Lynn's lineup. Rob Radez started his 4-way career in New England and eventually won USPA silver with SDC Rhythm XP in 2018. The original meet story of the NSL News in July 2000 included Dennis Rook as a member of Impulse Rhode Island. His team ended up one single point behind the USPA bronze medal position in 4-way Advanced.

NSL News on 25 July 2000: Did You Know... that Impulse Rhode Island improved their average at Skydive New England?

Robbie Spencer's team Impulse Rhode Island keeps charging toward the top of the leaderboard of the Eastern Skies. At last weekend's second season meet of the New England Skydiving League, Impulse won the Advanced Class with a 12.2 average. The new team's season average of 11.6 is tying the FSL team Zephyrhills Frost in 4th place of the Eastern Skies. With these results, Impulse are slowly putting themselves in a position of medal contention at this year's USPA Nationals.

Impulse team members are Robbie Spencer (Alternate), Dennis Rook (Point), Jim Rees (Tail), Tom Hendricks (Inside Center), Chuck Greely (Outside Center) and Rick Smith (Video). All team members are experienced competitors. As individuals, they have been competing and winning medals at the USPA Nationals with well-known teams in the past, like Mass Transit, Air Buddha and Mr. Burble. Player coach and team leader Robbie Spencer won a bronze medal at the FAI World Championship 1997 with the South African 4-way team Equanimity.

This year's Air Buddha lineup competed for the first time in 2000 at this meet, hosted by Skydive New England. Pepperell Expedition won the Intermediate Class competition with a 9.3 average. Pepperell Event Horizon gave local rival Expedition a strong competition round by round, but did not complete the last round. Both teams took turns scoring the highscores of the rounds.

Event Horizon are still in 1st place of the NESL rankings after the first two meets of the year. The team is also still holding the 1st place of all Intermediate Class teams in the country, regarding the season average. The third meet of the New England Skydiving League will be hosted by the Boston-Providence Skydiving Center in Rhode Island on the September 9 weekend. Blue Skies - Go Compete
