posted May 3rd, 2023 - The NSL News mentioned in the recent Indoor Cloud League update that the tight competition in 4-way Open and 4-way Women at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023 still generated only one tie in the rankings on both leaderboards.

It was expected that the competition for the 5th place and the Top 10 positions in 4-way Open would offer exciting battles for the better finishes. It was not a big surprise that the only tie of the whole horizontal Formation Skydiving competition eventually happened right at the Top 10 threshold.

Purple Maze from Finland and Papea from Spain both were expected to finish within or at least near the Top 10, after battling with several other teams in this area on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard. The actual competition turned out to be just as exciting as the NSL Power Rankings were indicating, and the two tied teams battled for the 9th place throughout all ten rounds. Their neck-to-neck race may have pushed them to create the 9-point distance to Out OF The Blue in 11th place after Round 10. They finished also well within striking distance up to the 6th place, where Echochamber Oceanside was only six points ahead after Round 10.

Papea, who finished in the most improved ranking position for Spain since the FAI Indoor World Championship 2019, could have finished even significantly higher on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard with cleaner scoresheets.

The total of 17 point deductions did not allow the Spanish team to move higher up in the rankings. The 257 points within working time would be enough to challenge Echochamber for the 6th place. The Swedish team lost a total of 12 points and completed 258 points in the 350 seconds.

Purple Maze benefited from their cleaner performance with only eight penalties, which was the lowest number for teams between 6th and 10th place.

In fact, only Arizona Airspeed, France and Germany's Airfource on the whole 4-way Open Class leaderboard suffered less damage than the Finnish team. Papea and Purple Maze both were expected Top 10 contenders and both succeeded with the tied 9th place. Neither had made it there at the previous indoor world championship at Weembi Lille in April 2019.

Finland was represented by the Pro Team in 2019. Purple Maze members Emilia Sormunen and Eija Suvala competed for the previous national team at that time and finished 11th, with father Kimmo and son Kalle Pohjola in the lineup. Emilia Sormunen and Eija Suvala continued with Nadja Lönnroth and Matthew Iles, who trained and competed with the Pro Team for a year, as well.

Papea competed with the same lineup who placed 8th at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 in Charleroi. The Spanish CISM team also placed 6th at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022 in Eloy, the best result for a Spanish 4-way team.

Finland did not have a team at the outdoor world championship, even though the team members are experienced outdoor competitors. Matthew Iles has not jumped from a plane in a while, as the NSL News reported on 18 February 2021. That's when he had his 4-way indoor comeback with the Finnish national 4-way team, the Pro Team.

His 4-way indoor comeback happened years earlier when Chymos/Max 4/Blackjack decided to resume with 4-way training and competition. The NSL News reported this comeback with the story on 2 April 2017. There is no indication of an outdoor comeback at this point in time...
