posted May 7th, 2023 - The Top 10 positions in 4-way Open at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023 turned out to be quite well defined, as the NSL News reported on May 3rd. Purple Maze (Finland) and Papea (Spain) had eventually created a 9-point difference to the next team in 11th place (Out Of The Blue).

Gary Smith still gave the Dutch national team in 4-way Open, Out Of The Blue (OOTB), a lot of credit during his evaluation of the results on April 29th. Mandy Feijen, Mechie VoermansBart and Bart Daenen have been training and competing together since 2017, Bart Daenen was still on camera in the first two years.

The current lineup, with Ralf Pijnenburg as the 4th member and Leon van Leeuwen on camera at the outdoor events, started together in December 2018. They placed 15th at the previous indoor world championship in Weembi Lille 2019 and missed the Top 10 last month only by nine points.

In the meantime, OOTB finished 10th at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 and 11th at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022. In Slovakia, they were the leader in the pursuit of the last Top 10 spots due to a clean performance. As it had turned out for Purple Maze, only Arizona Airspeed, France and Germany's Airfource suffered less damage than the Dutch team on the whole 4-way Open Class leaderboard.

Meraki (Great Britain), INIT-Y (Brazil) and Out Of The Blue were expected to be in contention for the Top 10, the British team even for the 5th place, while Agera from Norway were closer to the Top 10 than the last NSL Power Rankings before Round 1 were indicating. Gary Smith had also pointed out that Meraki did not perform as strongly as they had in Charleroi last year.

The distance between OOTB and the other contenders for the Top 10 to Purple Maze and Papea was finally significant with nine points and more. However, a closer look at the highscores for each round is showing that they all had the potential to score on the same level as the two last Top 10 finishers.

It was the consistency throughout the ten rounds that eventually made the difference. Especially Meraki were showing their potential in three rounds, with two highscores and a tie, and they still ended up in 13th place, after a total of 15 point deductions.

Agera won two of the rounds in the Top 10 battle, INIT-Y one. OOTB had to tie only one score of Purple Maze and Papea to take the 11th place, ahead of the three nearest opponents.

The potential of the same four teams behind the Top 10 becomes even more obvious with a closer look at the combined highscores. Out Of The Blue, Agera, Meraki and INIT-Y together outscored Purple Maze and Papea by three points (243 - 240). A peak performance of each of the four teams could have won a Top 10 position.

The NSL News had compared the scores of the expected Top 5 contenders (Echochamber, FLY X, HF Flying Circus, Purple Maze, Papea) the same way with the German Jochen Schweizer Arena Airfource who actually finished in 5th place.

The teams in this group of five opponents would not have been able to outscore the German Airfource, even not with their peak performances. They ended up four points behind the 5th place with their combined highscores, including the German penalties.

The four teams behind the 10th place together combined for a total of 243 points with their best scores, and they posted six highscores. Any team with a total of 243 points would have claimed the 9th place alone, while Purple Haze and Papea would still have finished tied in 10th place.
