... that four Dutch 4-way Open Class teams match the size of the U.S. delegation?

posted Aug 17th, 2023 - Round 1 of the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023 in Voss, Norway, is less than a week away. One of the most recent NSL Live Talk conversations was recorded on July 26th when Qatar coach Gary Smith was available to discuss the situation before the most relevant international Formation Skydiving competition of the year.

One of the conclusions after the conversation were a few adjustments on the NSL Power Rankings leaderboards. The latest changes followed on August 10th, shortly after the results of Denmark's outdoor championship were published.

Denmark's national team in 4-way Open, Sequenz, moved up in the rankings and is now expected to battle with one of the four U.S. teams (Lightspeed XP) and with one of the two other teams from Qatar who join the Tigers on the way to Voss. Sequenz had two of the four Dutch teams in their area on the preview leaderboards (Chaotic Motion VIXX, Lux) before moving up after the results at the national championship. The 4-way Open Class delegation from the Netherlands is the largest one in this category, together with the United States. Both countries have registered the maximum number of four teams.

Out Of The Blue - Chaotic Motion VIXX at the Dutch Outdoor Nationals 2022
Chaotic Motion VIXX in training for the outdoor world cup
Gary Smith pointed out during the NSL Live Talk conversation that he plans to watch the competition between the four Dutch teams very carefully. He lives in the Netherlands on the island of Texel and knows the current situation very well. Out Of The Blue (OOTB) has been the country's national team in 4-way Open for several years and have represented the Netherlands at FAI/ISC indoor and outdoor world cups and world championships since 2017. Any other Dutch 4-way teams could only join OOTB at the international FAI/ISC competition of the world cups. The upcoming event in Norway will be the first time that four Dutch teams are posting their scores on the same 4-way Open Class leaderboard.

The same four teams (OOTB - Chaotic Motion - Lux - 4igami) will then have a re-match shortly after returning from Norway, as the national outdoor championship is scheduled for the following week. Netherlands and Belgium are merging their events this year for a joint open championship.

Gary Smith mentioned especially the increasingly interesting duel between the national 4-way team and their strongest and and closely related opponent, Chaotic Motion.

Out Of The Blue - Chaotic Motion VIXX at the Dutch Outdoor Nationals 2022
Dutch AAA Class teams at the national outdoor championship 2022
Out Of The Blue and Chaotic Motion have the same roots. Danny Dorfel and Rick Verbunt are former OOTB members who eventually formed their own new team in 2019, Chaotic Motion. It took a little while until the new team slowly became a potential threat for the national team. 22 points still separated the two teams at the national outdoor championship last year.

The difference shrank to five points at the ISR Grand Prix indoor competition in November 2022, which was the last time that the same two teams were facing each other directly. Only Out Of The Blue had the privilege as the national team to represent the Netherlands at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023.

The NSL News covered the changing lineups of Chaotic Motion with the update on January 9th. Without any other changes, Danny Dörfel, Jaap Keuter, Sofia van der Vlist and Rick Verbunt will compete for the team in Voss and try to get as close to OOTB as the 2022 lineup was at the ISR Grand Prix in November.

Lux and 4igami complete the Dutch 4-way delegation at the outdoor world cup. 4igami is the longest standing 4-way team in the Netherlands. The team started with a 5.3 average in the Rookie Class of 2007. Now, and 16 years later, they compete at their first international FAI/ISC event. The NSL News will follow the Dutch teams just as carefully as Gary Smith plans to do.
