Did You Know...

... that judge Rogier Carper created a historic competition draw in Voss?

Historic competition draw at Skydive Voss
posted Aug 21st, 2023 - The official training day began late, and it did not generate the best live training opportunities for the judges. There were not too many scores for the two suggested sequences on the leaderboards that are now presented on a large screen in the middle of the dropzone at Skydive Voss.

Teams were still jumping in the afternoon making their own choices for the preferred sequences until it was time for the competition draw at 8 pm in the evening. However, there were still two scores that caught the attention of the observers after a closer look. France and XPG4 apparently presented videos of the same first of the two sequence to the judging panels (9,11,G) and France won the training round.

Kirk Verner informed the NSL News later that XPG4 actually performed the other sequence (Q,O,22,1) for their official training jumps, and the scoring numbers could not be compared directly.

Dutch judge Rogier Carper was selected as the person who would draw the numbers and letters manually from the hat, and he made history in front of the large crowd of teams and competitors. The competition draw for the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023 has nine consecutive rounds with block maneuvers as the start of these nine sequences.

Only the sequence of Round 10 begins with Random Formation F (Open Accordian) for a quicker start into the 35 seconds of working time. This has never happened at an outdoor world championship since 1997, and the ten rounds in Voss will be remembered in the 4-way community as a special competition draw.

Double duties in Germany: Airbus with coach Solly Williams
The special feature of a unique competition draw still does not change anything between the teams who all perform the same sequences in the same order. The challenges can probably rather be found in the meet conditions. Many of the participating teams are probably not used to starting a training or competition day with a takeoff time at seven o'clock in the morning.

The meet management is ready to use any opportunity to get the teams in the air as efficiently as possible. The two training days have shown that the flow of the competition could be interrupted at any time by the current weather situation in Norway. The 4-way teams are launching the outdoor world cup with their Round 1, while the 8-way teams have to show up at Skydive Voss at 10.00 am.

It will be a very long day for any competitors who are active in both events. Meet Director Carl-Erik Tuv, who is a DeLand Norgies world-class competitor and FAI medalist himself, also had to answer a few other questions that were related to the weather conditions, and he promised reasonable and fair conditions for all teams.

Germany's Linda Köb does not perform double duties this time, as she competes only in 4-way Women with Meltemi Oceanside. Only XPG4 and GKXP8 member Jeana Billings is facing the long days in both events. Linda Koeb and her team have to travel back quickly to Germany though, together with Airbus Illertissen Oceanside, as their outdoor championship begins a few days after Round 10 in Voss. Linda Köb, Thomas Mack, Felix Pfeiffer and Alex Prendinger will then follow up with double duties in Germany when they compete with Operation Adler in 8-way, together with Markus Bastuck who is also in Voss with his Cessna Caravan from the host of the upcoming competition in Saarlouis.
