Did You Know...

... that Blue Magic celebrated their 40-year anniversary with 4-way and 8-way videos of 1983?

Blue Magic 8-way lineup in 1983
posted Oct 31st, 2023 - Outdoor scores from Switzerland at major FAI/ISC events have been rare in the most recent years. Airheads competed at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2018, which is the last time in the NSL News records. Airheads, Realfly Fire and Airdrops competed at the national indoor championship in March, before Realfly Fire and Airdrops represented Switzerland at the 4th FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championship in Slovakia this year. Both Swiss teams have only indoor scores on their NSL News team pages.

The NSL News reported earlier that Switzerland hosted 4-way world champions long ago. The update that shared Realfly Fire's plans for the indoor world championship included an introduction of the Swiss national team Blue Magic, who won FAI 4-way gold medals at the outdoor world championship in 1983, 40 years before Realfly Fire competed for Switzerland in a windtunnel this year.

The rules were different 40 years ago. The dive pool was already divided in two categories, random formations and set sequences with block maneuvers. However, any competition round would only require one or the other, and the rounds with set block sequences were always the same. The most significant change of the rules by mixing up random formations and blocks happened after the world meet in 1983, and it launched the running age of an unlimited number of unknown options for any competition round. Blue Magic were the last 4-way world champions with the previous format, before DeLand Air Bears (4-way) and Coors (8-way) won the first FAI gold medals with the current rules for the U.S. delegation in 1985.

Blue Magic 40-year celebration in October 2023
Blue Magic 4-way world champion Marcel Aeby came back to action after a longer break. The NSL News reported on 14 August 2011 that he was in Switzerland's 8-way team VIVA at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2011, and the 8-way rules were changed after the outdoor world championship in 1983, as well.

The complete Blue Magic lineup had competed in 8-way for Switzerland, as well. In fact, the Swiss 8-way team with the Blue Magic members won the silver medals at the same world championship. The U.S. delegation matched the Swiss gold/silver combination in the reverse order, 8-way gold and 4-way silver. South Africa won the bronze medals in both events.

Marcel Aeby continued with VIVA and was in the 8-way lineup at his next outdoor world championship, almost 30 years after his previous one. The Swiss 8-way team finished in 5th place at the FAI Dubai Mondial 2012. Blue Magic together recently celebrated their 40-year anniversary, which included the review of 40-year old videos that feature 4-way and 8-way competition jumps following the previous format.
