Did You Know...

... that French national 4-way members had an 8-way team at the Weembinamic?

Close to the chamber wall: Mathieu Bernier and Bruno Perin
posted Nov 27th, 2023 - The competition between ISR FireFlash and Weembi Unicorns ended up with a 2-point difference on the traditional leaderboard, which is close enough for a closer look. However, it was only caused by the weak FireFlash start, as Sven Ibens explained live a few days ago. The Belgian team won the other eight rounds over Unicorns by a total of 14 points and never looked back.

Any 2-point difference at the end of a competition includes an interesting meet story, even though this one was not really detected during the Weembinamic action, as the competition format features elimination duels, where a weak start does not matter much.

It is also only the traditional leaderboard that uncovers a battle that was even closer than the duel between ISR FireFlash and Weembi Unicorns. Three 4-way teams were separated by one single point after all ten rounds, and they consisted only of French competitors. In fact, the same three teams, Nephtys, Aerokart Monaco and Chesspaf represented almost the complete current French Formation Skydiving delegation.

It was no surprise that national coach Mathieu Bernier took a front seat at the Weembi Lille chamber wall, especially when his teams were in action. Two of the same three French teams (Nephtys, Aerokart Monaco) competed with their complete lineups. Only Chesspaf was a pickup team with random members of the French Formation Skydiving delegation.

Chesspaf - Nephtys - Aerokart Monaco at the Weembinamic 2023
French national teams at the outdoor championship
Nephtys are the French national team in 4-way Women who had competed for France with their new lineup at the 23rd FAI World Cup of Formation Skydiving in Norway, where they finished in 2nd place behind XPG4. The same lineup had posted a 21.1 average at their first indoor competition in March, and they were now miles ahead of their first competition together, even without the Super Sequence in Round 10.

Aerokart Monaco are the former members of the French national team in 4-way Junior, who attended their first outdoor competition this summer, as the NSL News reported on September 28th. National coach Mathieu Bernier upgraded the team to the national B-Team without hesitation.

Only three Aerokart members were in the outdoor lineup (Cameron Malie, Oscar Massier, Thomas Misztal), as Noe Mattoni was not ready for a full transition to outdoor training and competition. His older brother Tom Mattoni is a current member of the French national team in 4-way Open, who also won silver medals in Norway and aim at challenging Arizona Airspeed. The NSL News mentioned in updates from Norway that father Stephane and brother Noe visited the outdoor competition at Skydive Voss to support Tom Mattoni and his team. Noe Mattoni was back in his new slot for the indoor lineup at the Weembinamic, and Thomas Misztal made room for him.

Rock8 Fullfly - Veloce QRF 2 at the Weembinamic 2023
1-point 8-way battle at the FAI Tanay Mondial
Thomas Misztal found a good alternative when he joined forces with Mathieu Quizy, who is Tom Mattoni's team mate in the French national team in 4-way Open. New Nephtys member Marie Pineau also committed to double duties with two 4-way teams and signed up for the additional ten rounds with Chesspaf. There she outscored herself with the Nephtys by one point. Axel Martinez completed the Chesspaf lineup, who competed with the young B-Team at the national outdoor championship. Nephtys' 4-way Women world champion Pamela Lissajoux also guided Kit 4 De Luxe to the silver medals in the AA Class.

Seven members of the same three French teams who battled in 4-way then joined forces to compete in 8-way, as well, with a colorful combination of the current French Formation Skydiving delegation. Damien Gouriou, the most experienced current French 8-way competitor, organized this colorful group of young French talent.

Damien Gouriou was in the French 8-way lineup who lost by one point to Paraclete XP8 after the dramatic 7-round battle at the FAI Tanay Mondial. He was recruited for the French 8-way team by coach Jeremie Rollett in 2014 and has continued with the national teams in 4-way and 8-way ever since. Rock8 Fullfly ended up in the same situation as After 8 in the 8-way battles. After 8 were safely in 2nd place on the traditional leaderboard and lost to Veloce QRF in the semifinals to finish 3rd. Rock8 Fullfly outscored Veloce QRF 2 by 11 points on the traditional leaderboard and ended up in 5th place, after loosing the first elimination rounds (5 - 6) to QRF 2.
