Did You Know...

... that Agera and Airbus are using the same team room in DeLand?

DeLand Norgies at a Florida Skydiving League meet in 2001
posted Nov 29th, 2023 - Norway has the most successful history of the Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) in Formation Skydiving competition. Three sets of bronze medals by the DeLand Norgies at the FAI world championships in 1999, 2001 and 2003 followed the two sets of Denmark's bronze medals in 1993 and 1995.

The world championship in Eloy 1993 was actually the most successful event for Scandinavia as a whole, with Denmark in 3rd place, Finland 4th, Sweden 5th. Each Scandinavian country was represented in 1993, as Norway finished in 18th place, and even Iceland had a national team on the 4-way leaderboard.

The DeLand Norgies competed regularly at events of the Florida Skydiving League, where they would meet other world class teams, such as Sebastian XL of Great Britain and DeLand Equanimity from South Africa, with Solly Williams and Gary Smith in the lineup.

Solly Williams later joined DeLand Majik, together with Gary Smith, and won the 4-way world championship title in Croatia 2004, with Joey Jones and Doug Park in the lineup. Solly Williams was already working intensively with the national 4-way teams from Norway as a coach at that time, which has continued into the present 4-way times.

Agera with coach Solly Williams at Skydive DeLand
The NSL News has been following the team development in Florida and Norway naturally, with DeLand resident Solly Williams as the connection. The Norwegian teams have been visiting Skydive DeLand for their winter and spring training camps regularly, which offered the opportunity for NSL News updates.

The coaching tradition continued with Norway's current national team, Agera, which was formed with the first lineup in 2019. Three of the original team members (Nadia Jorgenrud, Julian Frayne, Kjetil Viste Levik) are still training and competing for Agera and represented Norway at indoor and outdoor world championships and world cups, the last one in their home country at Skydive Voss in August.

Agera's new lineup with Amund Meyer in the tail slot, which DeLand Norgies' Carl-Erik Tuv was filling in Eloy 2022, left all other Scandinavian teams behind at the outdoor world cup. It was the second outdoor competition with the new lineup. Agera mentioned proudly during the NSL Live Talk conversation a few days ago that the new lineup had also defeated the DeLand Norgies for the first time at their national outdoor championship in July.

Agera's new lineup had represented Norway at the 4th FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championship in Slovakia for the first time, as well, and they finished in 12th place. NSL Live Talk with Agera on April 28th introduced the new team member at the event site of the Hurricane Factory Slovakia.

Agera - Aurora - Sequenz at the 23rd FAI World Cup of Formation Skydiving 2023
Tim Mack and Solly Williams in the Agera team room
The new lineup met some of their potential opponents in the competition for the 5th place behind the four current Formation Skydiving outdoor powerhouses (United States, France, Belgium, Qatar) in Slovakia (Echochamber from Sweden, Papea from Spain, Out Of The Blue from the Netherlands). Papea and OOTB followed up with the outdoor competition in Norway, where two other national teams battled for the same slot, Germany's Airbus Illertissen Oceanside and Italy's outdoor team Amnesya.

Four of the same national teams (Airbus, Amnesya, Papea, OOTB) placed ahead of Agera at the outdoor world cup in Norway, where Echochamber were not present. However, Agera's new lineup just started with outdoor training this year, and they have no doubt that they can catch up with the teams who are currently ahead of them.

One of the contenders for the 5th place in the world, which British team Chimera captured in Eloy 2022, is the German Airbus Illertissen Oceanside 4-way team, the country's national team since 2021. Their coach has been the same one that Agera is working with, Solly Williams, who enjoys the friendly rivalry between the two teams. Agera leave no doubt about their goal, as it is clearly stated in the team room at Skydive DeLand. Airbus outside center Thomas Mack's son Tim is currently spending more than half a year in DeLand. He and his father did not miss the message from Norway in the same team room that Airbus is using when they train in DeLand...
