posted May 1st, 2024 - The NSL News aftermath of larger events includes traditionally the combined AAA Class leaderboard, where teams who use the same competition draw are ranked according only to their athletic performances and the meet averages for the same sequences. The recent FAI Indoor World Cup 2024 had officially separate leaderboards for the competition in 4-way Open and 4-way Women.

There were also additional official leaderboards according to the geography of the countries where the teams are coming from, specifically this year the Asian and the European indoor championships. However, there were no teams in China who registered only for one of the two regional competitions. All 4-way Open and 4-way Women teams from Asia and Europe appeared on the world cup leaderboards, as well.

The two geographically oriented events applied rules of FAI/ISC world championships where only one national team can represent each country. The additionally registered teams for the same country, up to a total of four per nation at world cups, did not have a ranking position on the Asian and/or European leaderboards, which included the separation of 4-way Open and 4-way Women, as well. The NSL News aftermath does not only include the combined AAA Class leaderboard of all teams in 4-way Open and 4-way Women who use the same competition draw. It also covers the gender separation and cooperation in detail, which goes beyond the two officially sanctioned current events, 4-way Open and 4-way Women.

In contrast to military CISM championships, FAI/ISC events include only the separate 4-way Women leaderboard, while CISM events separate the gender consequently in 4-way Women and 4-way Men and do not offer an Open Class competition. Most of the all-male teams at the indoor world cup represent military services of their countries and compete at military championships with the same lineups, as well. All of the teams with mixed-gender lineups (yellow) are not full-time military athletes.

The all-male teams who also compete at CISM championships can only register for the 4-way Open Class competition at FAI/ISC world championship and world cups, while all-female lineups also have their own separate leaderboard as an option, whether they are military lineups or not. All-female lineups could also register for the Open Class leaderboard if they decided to do so. Mixed-gender lineups have only the Open Class competition as an option.

The combined leaderboard is showing two teams with different gender mixes dueling for the last two positions in the Top 10 rankings of the combined AAA Class leaderboard, China's all-male 4-way Open Class team and FLY X from Italy. The Chinese 4-way Open Class team could not get anywhere close to their 4-way Women team (305 - 261) who finished in the unofficial AAA Class bronze medal position. FLY X has been the strongest Italian 4-way indoor team and has Chiara Brunetti in the lineup, who has been competing for Italy with national 4-way Open Class teams indoors and outdoors for several years.

China 4-way Open - FLY X at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

The three possible combinations of AAA Class and all-gender lineups becomes even more interesting on the top of the leaderboard. The lineups of the teams in the Top 6 positions in China have a majority of female 4-way competitors. The same six teams in the world's current top positions include 13 female and 11 male 4-way competitors.

The currently highest level in 4-way competition is lightly dominated by female 4-way competitors, and the rest of the field is not much different. The lineups of the 23 teams on the combined AAA Class leaderboard that features only one team per country include 50 male and 42 female competitors.

Most of the seven additional teams on the combined 4-way AAA Class leaderboard with all participants are Asian military lineups who are selected according to their gender. However, China's 4-way Women team is not the only all-female lineup scoring higher than their male opponents of the same country. Indonesia's 4-way Women team outscored the country's 4-way Open Class team, and Thailand's team finished only two points behind. China had only one team on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard, while the country's third team placed 4th on the 4-way Women leaderboard with a 23.2 average, which made the 13th place of the 30 teams on the combined AAA Class leaderboard. Last and not least, China was the only other country with two teams in the Top 10 on the AAA Class leaderboard. As expected, the United States were the strongest nation, with Arizona Airspeed in 1st and XPG4 in 6th place.
