Did You Know...

... that Czech and U.S. teams shared the April leaderboards of the World Tunnel League?

Skywalkers Junior and HF Chameleons
posted May 22nd, 2024 - It has been a while since the last 4-way competition generated a significant leaderboard with teams who applied the same competition draw of the National Skydiving League's 4-way network. The NSL News aftermath of FAI/ISC events and USPA Nationals usually includes a combined leaderboard of teams in the 4-way Open, 4-way Advanced and 4-way Women categories who execute the same sequences at the same location.

The FAI Indoor World Cup 2024 generated a combined leaderboard of 30 teams in China (4-way Open/4-way Women), the USPA Nationals 2023 one with 26 teams (4-way Open/4-way Advanced). 4-way VFS and 8-way teams actually use the same numbers and letters for their sequences, as well, while the maneuvers are naturally totally different.

The shared competition draws and leaderboards, which the NSL 4-way Network has offered for more than two decades, has a different purpose though. It brings teams together who are not at the same location for their respective events, and it allows participating teams at least an opportunity to compare their scores and performance level to a certain degree. This format has connected the 4-way Formation Skydiving community in a special way across the planet.

It was in August 2023 when 16 teams used the last competition draw of the NSL 4-way Network and shared the same leaderboards in all four NSL categories (AAA - AA - A - RRR). The April competition of the World Tunnel League now lifted the participation to a different level that was more common before the impact of the corona virus crisis.

The participating Czech 4-way teams in the Hurricane Factory and U.S. teams at iFLY Colorado Springs used the NSL competition draw for April for their events, far away from each other, and they generated a shared leaderboard with a total of 31 teams. It was an interesting and exciting leaderboard where teams at both locations battled for the Top 3 positions and all across the mixed leaderboards.

Czech 4-way teams have participated in World Tunnel League and Indoor Cloud League events for many years, and Jan Klapka has generated world class teams and competitors with his 4-way junior school program using the consistent competition practice carefully to measure the progress.

Twelve Czech teams shared the leaderboards with 19 teams at iFLY Colorado Springs, where Eric Daniel and Emily Bombardi worked together once again with Jarrod Aranda of the Air Force Academy. They have cooperated in the past for events of the Indoor Cloud League and have been on ICL leaderboards since May 2022, as the NSL News reported on 28 May 2022.

The World Tunnel League events are the next step in the progression of new and established 4-way teams and competitors from the Rookie Class status to winning medals at national and international competitions. There were several teams of the Air Force Academy on the April leaderboard who have won medals at U.S. national indoor and outdoor championships.

Two members of the Air Force Tall Boys (Luke Anderson, Brock Holmgreen) had first placed 4th with their AAA/Advanced Class Class lineup at the USPA Nationals 2023, then followed up with the 1st place at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2024. Luke Anderson and Brock Holmgreen were back with Air Force Tall Men and two new members (Vik Rymniak, Chad Sufficool) in the AA Class at iFLY Colorado Springs.

Their indoor champion team mates Halle Pelletier and Gabby Wilson outscored the two Tall Boys with another new lineup, Jack and Jills, on the same AA Class leaderboard. The 4-way juniors of HF Helicopters were the only Czech team who could split the Air Force Academy delegation in the AA Class with their 3rd place.

At the same time, the Czech AAA Class teams dominated this category's April leaderboard by taking the Top 3 positions. The Air Force 9-Ball senior officers challenged the substituted HF Cubs for the 3rd place with their first 20-plus average. AF Halo and AF Gambit both finished with new team record averages, as well. Organizers Emily Bombardi and Eric Daniel then won the A Class competition with Jennifer Wrynn and Danny Suter in their civilian lineup, after a very tight competition over nine rounds with the Czech junior teams Sharks and Unicorns.
