Did You Know...

... that Menacing Moths' first scoring formation was out of working time?

From RRR in 2019 to AAA in 2024: Winged Hussars
posted Jun 7th, 2024 - The NSL News reported on May 30th that the Northern California Skydiving League was preparing for the next 4-way season with new league director Tamara Bartlett. The first event was successfully completed, and the three NCSL teams at Skydive California in Tracy shared last weekend's leaderboards with the British 4-way teams at Skydive Sibson.

The British teams had the AAA and AA Class leaderboards for themselves, as the NCSL teams used only the RRR and A Class sequences for their first experiences in 4-way competition. The British Army's 4-way team Volt4ge and Axis both had also attended the first 4-way meet of the UK Skydiving League 2024 at the beginning of May, and they were luckier with the weather this time.

The same two British AAA Class teams completed five rounds on Saturday, and they were joined by Winged Hussars at the team's first AAA Class competition. Axis had made the move up to this category after the 3rd place at the British Outdoor Nationals 2023, Volt4ge after winning the AA Class gold medals at the national outdoor championship of 2021. Winged Hussars actually skipped the outdoor AA Class, after winning the A Class silver medals in 2022. They won the AA Class at the British Indoor Nationals 2021 and also skipped the complete 2023 season. Now they had their comeback on the AAA Class leaderboard. Children of the Corn, British outdoor champions in the A Class last year, stepped up to the AA Class as required.

On eye level with UK teams: Rowdy Butterflies
Rowdy Butterflies represented the Northern California Skydiving League on the A Class leaderboard and performed on eye level with the British teams. The University of 4ORK won the A Class competition in the team's second year. They competed indoors and outdoors in 2023 and placed 2nd in the Rookie Class at the national indoor championship.

Rowdy Butterflies posted two highscores in their four rounds that the NCSL teams could complete before the winds picked up and did not allow more competition rounds for the lower experience level. Tamara Bartlett reported from Skydive California that five of her her participants were totally new to 4-way competition, while seven participants competed for the first time at an NCSL event. She said that her own Menacing Moths team mate Yifeng Zeng entered the competition with a total number of 36 jumps.

The new NCSL director had to answer a lot of basic questions about the 4-way dive pool and judging rules. Even the Bow (Random Formation H) was new as an exit formation, as well as the positioning in the door for a linked formation at all. Fortunately, it was not difficult for Tamara Batlett to answer any question due to her own comprehensive 4-way experiences. Rowdy Butterflies, with Taylor Robie and his 250 jump total in the lineup, still kept up with the British teams throughout the first four rounds that all A Class teams completed and were one point behind new British team Tachyon, two points behind The University of 4ORK.

Tamara Bartlett with Menacing Moths
Two teams from Northern California met five British teams on the Rookie Class leaderboard, and Team Desperate finished right in the middle. Suckling Lamb Gizzards were back with a significantly improved performance level after the first meet of the UK Skydiving League and took the 1st place, as well as XL Poo in 2nd place.

The British national outdoor championships include the RRR Class leaderboard, and Genesis in 3rd place are in their second year in the same category.

Tamara Bartlett introduced the Menacing Moths to 4-way competition, and the team was saving their first scoring point for the next event. She said that Menacing Moths actually built a complete scoring formation in Round 4 and could not get the credit for it. The 35 seconds of working time were already over. However, the new 4-way competitors were all very excited anyway. Tamara Bartlett's team mates' average jump number was 115, and she enjoyed watching the progress from Round 1 to Round 4. She said that Skydive California and the participants worked well together, even though some of the more experienced locals did not attend the first NCSL event this year. She plans to add more meet dates throughout the summer season.
