Did You Know...

... that Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett have a common NSL Live Talk history?

Jeremie Rollett and Gary Smith with coaches and competitors at the FAI Mondial 2016
posted Jul 23rd, 2024 - The NSL News recently covered the situation of one of the world's powerhouses in Formation Skydiving competition, the Qatar delegation. The comprehensive coverage of the CISM World Championship, which concluded with the NSL News update on July 18th, included Qatar's national team in 4-way Open, the Qatar Tigers, who won the bronze medals in Hungary. The Tigers will also try to defend their FAI bronze medals at the upcoming FAI Outdoor World Championships.

The story on July 19th followed up with the travel agenda of the Qatar Lions and the Qatar Cheetahs, the two 4-way teams who train and compete with the purpose of getting ready for the situation when the two national teams in 4-way and 8-way will need new team members.

Last and not least, the NSL News update on July 22nd completed the travel agenda of all of Qatar's Formation Skydiving competition teams this year before the outdoor season comes to an end, and before the teams turn to indoor training and competition. The NSL News was then fortunate enough to connect with two of the four coaches who work for the Qatar delegation and have guided them carefully to the world's top level over the years. Gary Smith brought Qatar's national teams in both events to their first set of FAI medals, 8-way team Falcons in Australia 2018, 4-way team Tigers in Tanay 2021. Gary Smith is now working with the Lions and the Cheetahs, Jeremie Rollett with the Falcons.

Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett do not travel much together, as they have their own and separate training and competition schedules, indoors and outdoors.

Gary Smith's travel mate is usually 4-way coach Luc Verstrepen. The Qatar Tigers also have their own and separate schedule with coach Andy Grauwels.

These logistics of the Qatar delegation make it easier to discuss topics with NSL Live Talk in the Coaches Corner when the Lions and the Cheetahs conduct one of the training camps with their two coaches, Gary Smith and Luc Verstrepen.

However, the Belgian former NMP PCH HayaBusa member Luc Verstrepen was not at the same location this week, while Gary Smith was working in Qatar.

At the same time, 8-way coach Jeremie Rollett was coaching the Qatar Falcons in Spain before they will compete at the French Outdoor Nationals next month. Jeremie Rollett has been living in Qatar already for three years, while Gary Smith still resides on the island of Texel in the Netherlands. Gary Smith in Qatar and Jeremie Rollett in Spain were still available to coordinate an online conversation for NSL Live Talk, despite the time differences between their current locations and the NSL headquarters in DeLand, Florida.

Qatar Tigers at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022 - NSL Live Talk with Gary Smith, Jeremie Rollett and Andrew Starr in February 2020
First FAI 4-way medals for Qatar delegation in Tanay 2021
It was in the middle of the corona virus crisis, in June 2020, when Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett discussed current topics with the NSL News in the Coaches Corner last time. They were at the same location for a training camp at Skydive City in February 2020, and the NSL Live Talk with Golden Knights team captain Andrew Starr was posted on 5 February 2020.

The Shamrock Showdown 2020 at Skydive City was then canceled due to the pandemic restrictions, and Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett discussed the strange situation with the NSL News online in June 2020.

Jeremie Rollett was already working with the Qatar Falcons 8-way team, while Gary Smith was the 4-way coach for the Qatar Tigers. They had switched their assignments at the end of the 2018 season, as the NSL News reported on 14 December 2018. The Falcons had just won the first set of FAI medals for Qatar in Australia with coach Gary Smith, and Jeremie Rollett had been working with the Qatar Tigers since 2015.

They discussed their history with Qatar's Formation Skydiving competition teams after switching their jobs within the delegation at that time. Jeremie Rollett is now in his 6th year with the Falcons 8-way team, and Gary Smith is expected to prepare the next generation of 4-way and 8-way medal winners for Qatar. They discussed several different topics in their latest NSL Live Talk conversation.
