Did You Know...

... that Sequenz won in Denmark after a last-minute substitution?

Sequenz at the Danish Nationals 2024
posted Aug 5th, 2024 - Denmark's national outdoor championship attracted 12 teams to this year's event, four in each of the three NSL categories (AAA/AA/A). This increased the 4-way participation in Denmark by two teams from 10 to 12. Organizers and participants were happy with the outcome, as well as with the completion of all ten scheduled rounds.

Sequenz, Denmark's national 4-way team of the past years, did not have much opposition and walked away with their 3rd national championship outdoor title since the comeback in 2019 that the NSL News covered comprehensively on 29 June 2023. However, three of the four AA Class teams battled for the medal positions and exchanged highscores round by round.

The story of the Sequenz comeback covered the changes of the lineups since the team was formed in 2007 and the preparations of a new lineup for the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023. The comeback lineup, with original team members Vibeke Birk Tideman and Ulrik Hoegsberg, had competed for Sequenz with Flemming Borup Andersen, Hans Oksen and Anders Krabbenhoeft on camera at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022. Peter Straede then replaced Vibeke Birk Tideman in 2023 when she stepped back after her 4-year comeback, and the new Sequenz lineup competed for Denmark at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023.

The new 2023 lineup won the next national 4-way title and matched the scoring level of Eloy 2022 exactly at the outdoor world up in Norway. Then they won the national indoor championship in November and made plans for the 2024 season.

Unfortunately, the recent update from the national outdoor championship in Denmark is showing the next change in the Sequenz lineup, which was unexpected this time. Flemming Borup Andersen, Ulrik Hoegsberg and Hans Oksen had to replace Peter Straede in the last minute, and they were fortunate to find another former Sequenz member available to step in on a short call.

In fact, Kasper Brandt-Svanekier is also an original Sequenz member of 2007. He, Vibeke Birk Tideman and Ulrik Hoegsberg trained and competed together for two years before Jesper Ruby and Torben Tideman joined the team. Kasper Brandt-Svanekier continued with Voluntas where he met his current Sequenz team mate Flemming Borup Andersen.

All original and current Sequenz members, including current substitute Kasper Brandt-Svanekier, filled the time period between 2010 and 2019 with their own 4-way commitments, which brought them back together at times.

Sequenz at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022
Kasper Brandt-Svanekier's last 4-way team between 2014 and 2016 was Prime Pickles. However, he was ready to step in for his former team at this year's national championship and fill Peter Straede's point slot adequately.

The 12.7 average with the short-call substitute last week was not too far from the identical finishing results (13.5) at the world championship in 2022 and the world cup in 2023. Sequenz were happy to be able and compete at all under the circumstances, and they won their next national 4-way title to qualify again as the national team in 4-way Open.

Sequence, even after this unexpected change in the lineup, would probably be able to at least copy the 13.5 average of 2022 and 2023 once again. However, Peter Straede will probably not be ready for competition in October, and Kasper Brandt-Svanekier would be needed again at the outdoor world championship in October. The current situation puts at least a question mark behind Sequenz participation in North Carolina. Denmark is one of the countries with the most consistent participation at outdoor world championships, has even won two sets of FAI bronze medals in 1993 and 1995 and missed only the events in 2018 and 2021. Sequenz resumed the presence of teams from Denmark at world championships and will hopefully have a lineup ready to go in October.
