... that the USPA Intermediate Class offered great competition at Skydive Chicago?

USPA Intermediate Class champions 2024: CSC Constellation XP

posted Sep 23rd, 2024 - The AA/Intermediate Class teams at the USPA National Championship 2024 lived up once again to the expected tight competition that the event has shown year by year. This year's results have created one of the most interesting leaderboards of the past years, as five teams finished on and above the 10-average level, separated by only 14 points from 5th to 1st place.

The depth of the field is best shown by the fact that highscores for any of the ten rounds went down to the 10th place. Spaceland Toxic won the bronze medals with only two of the ten highscores, and the two teams behind the Texas teams, SDC Quadrivium and 4Action, each claimed three highscores for a round.

Demo McDonnell's Toxic lineup of 2024 finished closer than ever to the gold medal position with a difference of only eight points and still ended up only in 3rd place. The previous lineup won USPA silver last year 11 points behind the winner. The NSL News mentioned earlier that Air Raid, Intermediate Class winner of 2023, now won gold medals in 4-way Advanced. CSC Constellation XP turned the 4th place at the USPA Nationals 2023 dominantly into gold this year with six highscores and only two point deductions. 4Action matched the smallest damage in this category with bad timing, as they lost the tied top spot after Round 2 with these two penalties and their worst first page in the round with the fastest sequence of the ten rounds.

CSC Constellation XP - XP Falcons - Spaceland Toxic at the USPA Nationals 2024
Clean video and impressive acrobatic performace: Joe Vianna (bottom right)
The two cleanest teams on the AA/Intermediate Class leaderboard also shared the best video performances, as their team videographers, Paul Webster for CSC Constellation XP, Joe Vianna for 4Action, did not miss any of the correct scoring formations. The respective two point deductions were caused by other infringements.

Both teams offered video footage that matched the quality of teams and their videographers on the higher levels in the AAA Class events (Open/Advanced).

4Action member Joe Vianna had more tricks than only high-quality camera performance in his personal repertoire. The NSL News camera caught him with his team after the competition when he performed some acrobatic treats at the team home in Ottawa.

His acrobatic performance matched the one that Amund Meyer of the Norwegian national 4-way team Agera was showing during NSL Live Talk at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023 where Agera's new tail performed a back flip in front of the camera. Amund Meyer was a gymnast before his skydiving career began, and Joe Vianna is a professional acrobatic performer. Amund Meyer has continued with Agera and 4-way training and competition ever since. Joe Vianna joined 4Action at the beginning of the 2024 season.

One of the latest NSL Power Rankings before the start of the USPA Nationals 2024 covered the AA/Intermediate Class situation in the United States.

The five top teams in the power rankings were eventually identical with the five teams that placed in the Top 5 at the national outdoor championship, only in different positions. They were the same five teams who finished with two-digit average numbers at the end of the meet.

CSC Constellation XP saved their best performance for the final event of the 2024 season and posted their highest AA/Intermediate Class average in Ottawa. The USPA champion of 2024 would now have to move up to AAA/Advanced Class competition, after the 4th place in the A/Beginner Class of 2021, the 11th place in the AA/Intermediate Class in 2022, the 4th place last year and the gold medals this month.

The XP Falcons in 2nd place started with a 2nd place in the A/Beginner Class of 2023 and spend their second year under the guidance of XPG4 and GKXP8 member Jeana Billings to take the silver medals with a meet average higher than in the A/Beginner Class last year.

Two more teams of the Top 10 in the NSL Power Rankings competed at the national championships, as well, and AerOdynamics finished with a new team record average (8.8) which made the Top 10 this year.

All teams behind CSC Constellation XP would be eligible to compete again in the same category next year, even though all the four teams behind the winner were in contention for the USPA gold medals, as well.
