posted Sep 24th, 2024 - The German 4-way delegation at the ESL Championship 2024 could celebrate the comeback victory of the event on home turf at the Fallschirmsportzentrum Saar (FSZ Saar) last weekend and took back the ESL Spirit trophy. Germany had won the ESL Spirit only twice so far, in 2016 and 2017 on the same home turf in Saarlouis.

The Belgian 4-way teams are still the all-time leaders since 2004 with six ESL Championship titles, followed by the Netherlands with five and Great Britain and Germany, now with three each. The British ESL delegation won the last event before the corona virus break, and Belgium took it back at the first comeback attempt on their own home turf in Spa 2022.

The small field in 2022 made it easy for the Belgian delegation to win the ESL Spirit, and they took the trophy with the maximum score of 40 points by four winning teams in the four NSL/ESL categories. The last event before the corona virus break in 2019 was more of a battle, where the British delegation finished with 34 ESL points over a total of 30 teams from eight different countries. The 4-way teams from Qatar could only participate as guest teams from a different continent, in 2019 as well as last week in Saarlouis.

Teams and Competitors at the ESL Spirit Awards of the ESL Championship 2024

This year's participation was not back yet to the times before the corona virus break, while it was significantly higher than in 2022. Five German teams used the home turf advantage this year, two weeks after their national outdoor championship at GoJump. Germany's national team in 4-way Open, Airbus Oceanside Illertissen (10), and RRR Class team Fireflies (8) collected ESL points after the previous competition in Gransee. Bazinga (10) and Das Kaos (8) contributed their additional 18 ESL points to the total of 36.

Dark Neva, who had won the AAA Class bronze medals at the German Outdoor Nationals 2024, were not needed with their 5th place and four ESL points on the AAA Class leaderboard. Qatar Lions won the AAA Class competition with their new lineup as they did in the A Class of 2019, and the Cheetahs were also back as a guest team on the AAA Class leaderboard.

Belgium had four teams in Saarlouis, including ISR FireFlash who finished three points behind Airbus. ISR FireFlash (8), Ayro (5) and Falco (3) together collected a total of 16 points in the AAA Class for the Belgian delegation, and The Loop (6) added six AA Class points to the total of 22 for the 2nd place on the ESL Spirit leaderboard. Ayro, Falco and The Loop had just completed their own national championship at the same time when the German teams competed in Gransee. The Belgian teams and competitors had to hand over the ESL Spirit trophy to the German delegation. Steelers (10) and Mriya (2) collected 12 ESL points for Ukraine, Skywalkers Junior 5 for the Czech Republic. Schnelle Schnecken (1) and Shinobi (1) added Great Britain and the Netherlands to the leaderboards.
