Did You Know...

... that teams from China and Australia had the longest travel distances?

Havoc at the opening ceremony
posted Oct 18th, 2024 - Two teams at the 26th FAI World Formation Skydiving Championships in North Carolina competed for the longest travel distance to make it to Crystal Coast Skydiving, and both teams won easily in their respective events. China's 4-way Women team traveled from eastern Asia to the U.S. east coast, and 4-way Open Class team Havoc came from Australia.

China won silver medals in 4-way Women, while Havoc won the duel with Netunos from Brazil to stay away from the bottom of the leaderboard. Havoc versus Netunos was one of the many internal battles at international FAI/ISC events between teams who are not in contention for any medal positions. However, these battles are just as exciting for the teams who challenge each other on the leaderboards.

The 4-way Open Class national teams from Australia and Brazil were still tied at the end of the second competition day after Round 8. Havoc had the better two final rounds and finished four points ahead with a new team record average.

The 4-way Open Class team from down under had qualified for the outdoor world championship in March this year. They had only half a year of preparation time, compared to most of the other teams who win their qualification at the national championships the year before, caused by the differences of the earth's hemispheres and the different weather situations during the respective seasons.

Havoc at the closing ceremony
Havoc had serious opposition in March in Australia, where members of former national 4-way teams joined forces with Rotor Reload and challenged Havoc seriously after warming up in the earlier rounds. The 0-point Round 7 eventually terminated the duel in favor of Havoc, even though Rotor Reload won the last three rounds.

Havoc committed to the representation of Australia in 4-way Open at the outdoor world championship and attended another competition in September in preparation for the trip to North Carolina. They did not beat their own highest meet average at the 2024 Australian State Championships in Moruya, New South Wales, and saved their best for the upcoming duel with Netunos from Brazil.

Havoc lifted their 13.5 average in March to the 14.8 at Crystal Coast, which was enough to outscore Brazil's Netunos by the four points that they won in the last two rounds.

The NSL News found the Aussies right before the awards and closing ceremony, and the team members had a few minutes before the dinner banquet to introduce themselves. The Australian team had caught the attention of the NSL News during the opening ceremony, as well, and the NSL Live Talk conversation completed the down under circle at Crystal Coast.
