... that Fall Fast Finish Last won British Indoor by 97 points?

A Class awards at the British Indoor Nationals

posted Nov 23rd, 2024 - Wavey Wackers (AA), Bootie Call (A) and Fall Fast Finish Last (RRR) won the other three categories at the British Indoor Nationals 2024. The growing difference between 4-way indoor and outdoor competition was showing especially on the AA and A Class leaderboards.

Wavey Wackers (4th) and Bootie Call (3rd) both were not even close to the top of the leaderboards at the British Outdoor Nationals in August. Two months later, they won their respective categories at the national indoor championship.

Wavey Wackers had placed 2nd in the A Class at last year's event and decided to step up to the AA Class this year. They attended the July meet of the United Kingdom Skydiving League (UKSL) where they could only get the competition practice of one round due to the weather situation. Then they finished one point behind the bronze medals in their new category at the national outdoor championship and even matched their A Class average of 2023 (15.7) to win the indoor competition. Children of the Corn, last year's A Class outdoor winner, took the 1st place again, this time in the AA Class, while they allowed Wavey Wackers to win the indoor championship. Both teams will have to step up to the AAA Class in their respective gold medal categories, while they will probably make the same move in the event that they did not win.

Wavey Wackers - Bootie Call - Fall Fast Finish Last at the British Indoor Nationals 2024
RRR Class awards at the British Indoor Nationals 2024

A Class winner Bootie Call came from the RRR Class of the 2023 season where they had won the national outdoor bronze medals. They also tested the A Class with the one single round at the same UKSL weather meet in July before winning the next set of bronze medals in the next higher category. Then they turned the bronze medals into gold at the national indoor championship.

One of the most interesting situations was created on this year's RRR Class leaderboard. Brian Cumming, operator and host of the Radio Skydive UK, directed the attention of the NSL News to the winner of the RRR Class at the national indoor championship at Weembi Lille, Fall Fast Finish Last.

He pointed out that this year's RRR Class winner launched their 4-way team career with the last place at the British Outdoor Nationals 2023 and a 1.6 average. Original team members Gabrielle Rock and Matt Oldham still decided to continue and joined forces with Tom Fagan and Pete Rithisith. A year later they won the national outdoor championship in August (14.9) and invested into their skills with additional indoor training. Then they won the British indoor title, as well, with a 24.5 average.

Pro Team with Kalle Pohjola at the World Challenge 2013
The story of Fall Fast Finish Last does not end with the 1-year progression from last place to 1st. The 2024 lineup won 97 points ahead of the RRR Class team in 2nd place, which is the largest winning margin in the NSL News records at British national championships. The same lineup would surely have to step up to A Class competition next year.

The 97-point difference is still not the record number in Great Britain. The World Challenge in Bedford used to be the the world's largest 4-way competition before it was discontinued due to a general scheduling conflict when FAI/ISC began to host indoor competition at the same time of the year.

The British national indoor championship was embedded in the World Challenge at that time, when up to 80 and 90 teams competed at the indoor event. Teams visited Bedford from all across the planet, including the Pro Team family from Finland. Parents Outi and Kimmo Pohjola took their son Kalle Pohjola to the RRR Class competition at the World Challenge 2013 when he was 12 years of age, together with Eija Suvala in the lineup. The Pro Team with Kalle Pohjola won 190 points ahead of Italian team Panik. They came back to Bedford three years later for the A Class competition, this time with Juho Mikkola in the tail slot and 16-year young Kalle Pohjola as inside center. This time they won by 111 points over Czech team Phoenix. Fall Fast Finish Last now own the highest winning margin on exclusive British leaderboards.
