... that Garudas won the extra round in Roosendaal for a new team record average?

posted Dec 4th, 2024 - The annual ISR Grand Prix indoor competition in Roosendaal, Netherlands, took place once again last weekend. The 32 teams completed their usual eight rounds on the same day. The limited dive pool allows only the eight rounds, which favors the earlier conclusion of the competition and the smooth transition into the popular social part of the event.

ISR FireFlash distanced themselves from the rest of the field, even though the Belgian team missed their inside center of the past even years, Sven Ibens. ISR FireFlash completed 22 indoor and outdoor competitions since 2017 before Sven Ibens would miss his first competition with the team.

The NSL News update on September 29th included NSL Live Talk with Sven Ibens and the announcement that he has concluded his competitive 4-way career. The ESL Championship 2024 was his last competition with FireFlash, even though he still plans to attend events randomly here and there. ISR FireFlash still performed on a scoring level that was out of reach for all other teams, as the returning team members found a very adequate substitute. NMP PCH HayaBusa's inside center since 2022, Neal Willems, was available, as his team had no plans for participation at the ISR Grand Prix this year.

ISR FireFlash - Magic 4 at the ISR Grand Prix 2024
Garudas at the Weembinamic 2024
Sven Ibens' family name was still on the leaderboard, as his son Siem joined Belgian team Falco this year, as the NSL News reported on October 24th. Father Sven and son Siem Ibens both actually competed at the ESL Championship 2024, Sven with ISR FireFlash, Siem with Falco.

Siem Ibens did not have to wait very long until he would experience his first extraordinarily exciting 4-way competition. Falco and Garudas were tied in 3rd place after their battle throughout the regular eight rounds. They added an extra round to break the tie, and the Garudas won Round 9 by three points.

Magic 4 from Lithuania was as much out of reach for Falco and Garudas as ISR FireFlash was for the whole field of AAA Class teams. They finished right behind the winner this time, after a 5th place at their first visit in Roosendaal last November. Garudas came well prepared to Roosendaal for the ISR Grand Prix 2024. They had their two warm-up events with ten rounds each in November, first at the British Indoor Nationals 2024, followed by the Weembinamic 2024. The 27-pointer in the extra round would lift their meet average (21.4) to a new team record level.
