Did You Know...

... that the complete new Airspeed lineup shared insights at NSL Live Talk?

Arizona Airspeed in Spain 2020
posted Feb 12th, 2025 - The NSL News has covered the new Arizona Airspeed lineup comprehensively ever since it became known that the personnel change would happen after the 26th FAI World Formation Skydiving Championships in October last year. The coverage included the recruiting campaign and details about the new team members once the lineup was complete.

However, the new lineup has not been visible much at all for the NSL News audience, neither in freefall nor in a flying chamber nor in conversation. Niklas Hemlin, former Airspeed member of the previous lineup, provided his insights during NSL Live Talk on 20 November 2024, a few days after returning member Joey Marshall discussed the situation of the new lineup with the NSL News.

The new Airspeed lineup eventually began with training as soon as new members Alisson de Vargas (Outside Center) and Doug Hendrix (Tail) were accommodated well enough and ready to begin the new cycle of Arizona Airspeed's pursuit of the world's 4-way top position. It still took a little while until the first NSL Live Talk with the complete new lineup was logistically possible, even though team videographer Alex Swindle was not a part of the conversation. Arizona Airspeed began with indoor training in Eloy, where the team videographer is not needed. The four team members had just completed a big-way event at Skydive Arizona and switched to indoor training. The first NSL Live Talk conversation with the new lineup took place after indoor training and debriefing yesterday.

Too far ahead at the moment: Aethers Medjay at the Wind Games 2025
It was coincidence that the first NSL Live Talk with the new Airspeed lineup happened just a week after the Wind Games 2025, where two U.S. teams, Tunnel Vision and Golden Knights, finished on the top of the leaderboard, behind Aethers Medjay (FR) and NMP PCH HayaBusa (BE).

Returning Airspeed members Joey Marshall and Chris Kuhlmann have great memories of their trip to Spain in January 2020, where the Wind Games would become their first competition with a new Arizona Airspeed lineup. They began their own journey to the two FAI world championship titles and their names on the legendary William H. Ottley Sword for the 4-way and 8-way world champions at the same event in 2020 with a very impressive and promising performance.

The new Airspeed lineup would have liked to compete at the same event this year, which was not possible due to the eligibility situation at the moment. Joey Marshall explained once again why his team had to skip the trip to Spain this year. Of course, the team members followed the competition action carefully to evaluate the current situation on the world's top level in 4-way competition, and they had commentary for the NSL News, as well. Soon they will meet at least the two U.S. teams live at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship, Tunnel Vision and Golden Knights.

Reigning U.S. indoor champions: Arizona Airspeed
Arizona Airspeed know realistically that they cannot set their own standards of the new lineup in comparison with the winner in Spain, Aethers Medjay (FR). They had their eyes more on the performance level of the two U.S. teams, who will be their opponents at the events in the United States, together with SDC Rhythm XP. The French national team in 4-way Open will become the Airspeed target at some point later on the way of the new lineup to the top level.

The complete lineup will attend the upcoming U.S. indoor championship at Paraclete XP, even though they will not be eligible to win the 4-way title officially. Travel restrictions and eligibility are the two obstacles this year, which will probably also be in the way for Airspeed to travel to the Netherlands and the outdoor world cup. They expect all obstacles to be removed at the time of the USPA Nationals in October on home turf at Skydive Arizona.

Arizona Airspeed are still the reigning U.S. indoor champions and eligible to compete for the U.S. delegation at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 in April, if they replace Alisson de Vargas with a member of the winning lineup last year. Joey Marshall and Chris Kuhlmann said that they would be ready to use an eligible substitute to compete for the United States. The new lineup is already familiar with the new Block 20 (Zipper - Zipper) after the most recent change in the dive pool, which was not applied at the Wind Games and will probably be ignored at the U.S. indoor championship, as well. The new Block 20 will be a part of the competition draw at the USPA Nationals, and the Shamrock Showdown 2025 will include it, as well, at the outdoor season opener.
