Have You Heard...

... that there is an indoor and outdoor deadline for the old and new Block 20?

New Block 20: Zipper - Zipper
posted Feb 16th, 2025 - The NSL News has covered the potential dive pool changes comprehensively in the run-up to this year's meeting of the FAI International Skydiving Commission (ISC) and the 75th Plenary Meeting in Rome, Italy, that began at the of January.

The minutes and decisions of the meeting have not been published yet officially, while the present IPC delegates of the participating countries in Italy could spread important information after returning home. Jim Rees, U.S. delegate and current member of the ISC Formation Skydiving Committee, was even able to use the brand-new information for the indoor competition at SkyVenture New Hampshire.

The NSL News reported on February 10th how the AAA Class teams at the first indoor competition this year in the United States had the choice of performing either the old version of Block 20 (Piver - Viper) or switch right away to the new Zipper-Zipper maneuver. Three of the five AAA Class teams decided to perform the new Block 20 (Zipper-Zipper). Jim Rees also confirmed for the NSL News that only one of the two suggestions found the majority in the ISC Plenary Meeting, which usually approves the suggestions that are presented by the ISC Formation Skydiving Committee (currently Mark Szulmayer, David Grauwels, Claire King, Vana Parker, Trude Sviggum, Jim Rees, Randy Connell, Matthew Fry).

Yellow: Teams performing the new version of Block 20 (Zipper - Zipper)

Block 20 in Round 5 of the Indoor Competition at SkyVenture New Hampshire
Unchanged: Block 8 (Canadian T - Canadian T)
The members of the ISC Formation Skydiving Committee did not agree to both suggested changes for the 4-way dive pool. Block 8 (Canadian T - Canadian T), one of the longest standing blocks since the current format was introduced in 1985, remains unchanged, and only Block 20 turns into a completely new and different maneuver (Zipper-Zipper).

The split application of the new Block 20 between the five AAA Class teams at SkyVenture New Hampshire reflects another important split of the old and the new version in a different way. There is a different time-frame for both versions, which determines when the old Piver-Viper version runs out and the new Zipper-Zipper will be required.

FAI/ISC decided that the old Block 20 version, Piver-Viper, will still be used at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 at Paraclete XP in April. The new version of Block 20 will replace Piver-Viper officially beginning on May 1st. However, they also decided that there is no need to discourage teams and organizers from applying the new Zipper-Zipper version earlier in training and competition. Block 20's old version (Piver-Viper) comes to an end for outdoor competition at the end of the month. February 28th is the official deadline, literally. Zipper-Zipper will be required as the new maneuver for Block 20 on March 1st at outdoor competition, and the Shamrock Showdown 2025 could become the first outdoor event for AAA Class teams to apply the new version - if Block 20 will be drawn.
